do airplane models have a gloss clear coat added to give a metallic look or is there some other kind of technique????

well it depends some planes have a glossy coat some dont,
like all most all of the miltary planes have a flat coat.
and some are glossy,
a lot fo ww2 planes where flat coat

thanks for clearing that up i thought all planes were glossy in appearence.

:-) Most WW II planes that are still flying have a glossy finish, it's easier to mantain. Most planes flying in WWII had a matt camouflage, but there are exceptions. Even these exceptions would weather to a more matt finish.
For model aircraft a gloss coat is add, after the camouflage paint, to prevent the decals "silvering" (trapped air caused by the matt paint) and to help them snuggle down on to the surface, I would then add another couple of gloss coats. I would then weather the model then apply a matt coat to return the camouflage and the decals to a matt finish.
I have just submitted an article on apply a gloss coat, it may be published soon :-)
If by metalic look you mean a natural metal finish, then this is a whole different ball game. Special paints or foils are used for this :-) HTH
