I have done the same. Even with an armor diorama in the works, I suddenly switched gears and now pursuing aircraft modelling. I can literally say I have not built an aircraft model since 1998.
Why the switch all of a sudden like? No idea. Maybe something hit me in the head and I just wasn't aware of it. I started modelling as a hobby with aircraft models way back in 1986. My father was stationed in Keflavik, Iceland and there was nothing else to do in Keflavik, Iceland way back then for a 15 year old punk. So I modelled aircraft because the base hobbyshop had no armor.
16 years later I am still modelling and now coming back to aircraft after a 4 year break!

Hi there, Ponysoldier! Which era of aircraft is your favorite to build? For me, it's WW II. There's just something special about those old propellar aircraft. The custom nose art and the kill markings help to make a unique paint scheme.
So far I've only built 2 1/72 scale airplanes, but I'm gonna move up to a 1/48th model here pretty soon. Maybe a P-38 or a corsair.
Anyway, we look forward to hearing more from you!

From the 1/48th beware you should !
Or no space for the jedi fighter will you have left !
Yeah, these 1/48th aircraft tend to take a bit too much space... mainly when you start
looking at that cool avenger, the beautiful black widow...

. . .The mighty Flying Fortress, the ubiquitous Liberator. They can get mighty big. I prefer 1:48 myself as well - I think you just get a better feel for the aircraft and subtle differences are more noticeable.
Always nice to see another aircraft modeler here Ponysoldier.
Speaking of big, did anyone ever tackle Monograms 1:72 B-36 Peacemaker? That's a BIG model! I did one years ago when my skills weren't quite up to the task. It still lives in my parents basement (minus a couple of propeller blades), and I'd like to rescue it someday - if my wife would ever let it into the house. :-)

My appartment is no more than 30 square meters big, so I'll let you imagine
how much space I've got left to display my models...

A plane that has me dreaming is the B49. Back then, it was SCIFI.
Ponysoldier, there's an other what if going on also, it's in "crossing the yalu".
It's fun to listen people who don't think the same as you !

Whoa dude! That is one big plane! Thanks for the pic, Phantom!
Was it some high-altitude bomber? I guess I didn't know they had designed bombers with the props aft of the wings.

Yes the B36 was intended to fly very high.
The engines were awsome : radial engines... with 36 cylinders in 4 rows ! The same engine was used on super corsairs.
The problem with having the propelor aft of the wing, is that it keeps coming in and out of the slipstream, creating a big stress on several mechanical parts.

High altitude, loooong range strategic bomber. So big the flight engineer could actually go out into the wing in flight to check on the engines. So big there were only a handful of bases that could handle the beast. I believe it was one of the first planes to use the multiple-wheeled main landing gear - its original dual-wheeled main gear had a nasty habit of breaking through runways and taxiways.
As I write this, I know you're sitting in AoTC, so I hope you enjoyed it. I'll be leaving soon for the theater myself.
May the Force be with you!
