I was at a local hobby store when I saw this kit and noticed something wrong with the boxart.
Clue - it was very important to the mission

Is it missing the bomb load?

As I can see, the bomb load has already been thrown!
The problem is that it has no main landing gear

Cheers Nick

The picture is a good one but the artist made a mistake in their research

Should it have bomb bay doors? Was a dam-buster bomb so big that the doors would have been removed?

There are no visible bomb racks. perhaps?

No they did not have bomdbay boors.

Clue - It is some thing that no other Lancaster's carried apart from the aircraft involved in the raid.

No spotlights? Dambuster Lancasters were equipped with special spotlights unique to the a/c on that mission.I believe they were used to judge height from the surface
Maybe those little beams in the picture are supposed to represent the light beams from the spots? I dunno. I give. What's missing?

You are both right and wrong.

The spot lights are shown but the rear one is in the wrong place (in the picture). It shown mounted above the bomb ( where the bomb would block the light) instead of at the rear of the bomb bay

After looking at some pics of the dam buster I noticed that there is a motor and belt drive above the bomb for the rotation of the bomb. Unless this is released with the bomb, I would say that this is also missing in the box art picture.

How about the chain drive unit to counter spin the bomb? Seems to be missing in the art work.

a lot will be artistic licence .

whilst yes it isn't accurate , it carries all the main ingreadients of the dambusters raid

i feel the artist did it this way because

the stunning composition he required , in paint you would have lost the spotlight beam in the dams splash

the artists solution would have been to move the light forwards to give a better composition against a darker background

i feel the artist after all his research will know this

however 99 % of the kits purchasers probably won't

and so long as the main ellements are there to keep future generations intrested i don't feel it matters

so longs as it is correct on the model ( which the artist probably worked from !!
