Hi all
I am close to getting crazy ... darn stencils (of course Rowan is right, but I am lacking time and cannot split the job into many sessions .. still it is better than the JF-17 as at least every stencil is named, including one or two errors)
I think I have about 1/4 of the job done, but I need a break now:
(upper wings side and upper left fuselage done) .. I chose black stecils as I found teh blues too bright. Also I think the LSK/LV machines got German stencils after refurbishment in Dresden (I used the russian ones).
all the best
Steffen

Hi Steffen,
nice to see your Mig advancing, at last
IMHO you should stop further stenciling and even town down the existing ones (maybe through filtering)! If you look at pics of LSK/LV Mig's you'll barely notice the existance of stenciling, but in a very subtle fashion. (781 and her 'sister' 782 are depicted very nice in W.Kopenhagen's "Die andere deutsche Luftwaffe" pg. 80)
And you're right, after general maintenance in Dresden, the stencils have been reapplid in german language. You may take a look at "Final Touchdown" from Concord. There you'll find a pic of a "black guy" overspraying the national insignia on the fin. One can clearly read "Umlenkhebel Seitenruder" and other german stencils...
Good luck!!!
Volker

Slow but steady ... hope I can add the missing parts and a flat coat tomorrow -- excpt loading the wing pylons, as I do not want to rush that and the a/c is still ready for display without them.

Hi Steffen
I spotted your finished pic (still weapons to do) in the MiG campaign thread. Nice job!
I realise now what you meant about the blue stencils seeming too bright - the few you have used are much lighter and brighter than those included with the 'SMT:

Hi Rowan
yep, those look a lot better. Here are a few pix from the IPMS Deutschland show:
not very good, but better than nothing.
cheers
Steffen
P.S. the R-13 with pylons are done still need to build the RS-2S, but for today the website update has priority

Hi Steffen
Nice one! I'm really pleased for you that you got it ready for the show.
I think my build will be unarmed like yours for a little while because Alex is sending us some suitable North Star weapons for it to review, so I'll use the MiG to display them.
All the best

Here is the final batch of pictures of the finished model. Those of you who were at Telford coul already see it besides Jean-Luc's MiG-21 on the IPMS Deutschland stand...
I am not fully happy with all aspects of my built model, but it is o.k. for my shelf. Nonetheless comments welcome!

Hi Steffen,
oh, come on: Not happy with it!? Why?
IMHO you definitly hit the camo colors. Esp. the khaki-like color.
May I ask what colors you used?
Happy holidays!

Hi Volker
I keep that for myself ...
I mixed my own from several Revell Aquacolor .. nothing I normally do, but the colours are off standards and J-L did that too and I liked his camo (his was in TMMI). You could have seen in Telford how different our MiGs were not sure if anyone photographed them here is a view of our stand (most models of us two his MiG is on the right)
Frohe Weihnachten to you too!
all the best
Steffen

Hi Steffen,
choosing the colors comes out to be quite difficult on LSK/LV a/c! I myself saw the base color of a Mi 24 changing from light greenish (a little like dugg egg) to sandy in between minutes cause it started to rain.
Comparing both ships from pics I saw I think your colors are more 'on the spot', JL's one appears to be more on the brown side...
Best wishes and carry on with your work...

Hi Volker
he did another machine (the one from the box) and used museum photos of that a/c. As wrote I used the picture in "Flugzeuge der DDR" (Fliegerrevue/TOM).
When I showed the model at Gatow there was a former LSK/LV guy who told me this was "his machine" (mechanic) and I represented it pretty good (that made my day!)

Hi Steffen,
nice Fishbed! To me, the overall finish is just perfect!!
The AA-1 "Alkali" guided AAMs on the outer pylons, were they still in use with the MiG-21MF? I think these first generation guided AAMs have been in use with MiG-17 PFU and MiG-19?
Servus,
Sebastian

Thank you Sebastian
I found a picture of a DHS* MiG-21MF with exactly this combination in "Flugzeuge der DDR". I liked this interesting combination and as I wanted to do a DHS machine ....
* DHS= Diensthabendes System .. roughly QRA
