Ive got back into modeling after a 2 year break, family matters. I am starting out with a Fokker Dr.I that was piloted by Ltn. Werner Voss. This is the tried and true 1/28 Revell kit with Toms PE and Copper Decals. I will post picks as soon as I figure out how:)

Hi Todd
I remember this kit with some fondness as I built it in the early 1970s. I remember thinking that green streaks on a blue airplane must have been a mistake in the instructions.
I'm anxious to see how you turn this one out, particularly with the PE.

Good to see you making progress Todd. Yes theres still life in the old Revell kit for certain.
Dennis, It's been the topic of conversations, discussions and heated arguments over time, whether the F1 and indeed some of the DR1's were finished in a base colour of turquoise under the streaking.
Theres written evidence to say yes and no of course. I do have to admit I fall into the Yes camp on this one, besides the fact it makes for a more attractive finish

Hi Keith
Trying not to hijack this thread (unfair to Todd) and stray too much off topic, it's my fault for not being quite clear, I originally thought, in my younger days, that the whole concept of green stripes on a blue background was a really strange combination for a camouflage pattern (then again I thought, at the time, that all triplanes were red!.
I certainly agree now that green on blue (or yellow-white) can be pleasing to the eye. I'm easy-I'll accept any of those described.

Todd, feel free to check here abouts on the scheme you are doing. In some of the older threads you will find them done by other fine modelers. The F.I and Dr.I have been thoroughly explored. Eduard Fokker Dr.I & Roden Dr.I and F.I kits and streaking are some meta words to use in the search engine.

Ok. as promised, more of my train wreck.
An overall view of my work so far
The completed engine, Washed in black and the exaughst is rustall.
the seat is the stock seat modified with my Daughters hair tie to simulate the leather ring on the seat.
The streaking can be seen better in this pic.
The upper wing, same technique as the fusalage.
Now Im waiting on Decals for the inserments and the plane itself.
Now where did I stash that D.VII?

Hi Todd
I wholeheartedly agree-streaking is tough, but your attempt looks pretty good to me.
What did you use for paints and brushing? When I built Voss's plane I use oils (Winsor and Newton olive green) and a fan brush with a drop of Japan Dryer added. The oils gave me time to work with the streaks until I was reasonably happy. I initially tried a comb brush but I wasn't happy with the results.
Looking forward to further updates on this one...

Thank you kind Sir!
I started with a coat of enamel semi-gloss Light metallic blue on the whole wing upper and lower sides.
I also pre shaded all the ribs on the bottom.
Then I used gedium green acrylic paint watered down to a semi heavy wash consisity and then used a parts cleaning brush and just kept going with the pattern till the paint set up.
I will do a better article tomorrow, and have pics, the biggest trick is to have patience.

Hi Todd:
A noteworthy effort. It is nice to see these old Revell kits come to life. What's next?

Hi Todd
Very nice result. Streaking looks good. I see that you went with the green cowling and the white tail instead of the yellow (my choice also).
If you want to have a crack at this version of the F1 sometime in the future I would heartily recommend the Encore kit from Squadron.

Thanks Marc, Mark and Dennis.
I would be more than happy to tell you how I managed to get that streaking look.
I just might do a tutorial on it after I perfect it, I have some ideas to improve on the looks om my next DR.1, and surprise it wont be the yellow nose Voss bird, its a secret till I start posting the build.
Right now Im on the Spad XIII early version, had to wait on some Toms Model Works PE and Decals from France, and they are slow in shipping.
I will be posting pics tonight of the Spad.
And a special thanks to Stephen for totally ruining me and making me come to the Dark Side away from Armor

Nope; I can't either and I really would like to......
Todd,
I did the he streaking thing on a Dragon DRI years ago and recall it took forever. A couple of quick photos attached below. I used a mixed version of CDL as the base coat and also a mixed version of the dark green (all Model Master enamels) and dry streaked it to get the effect. Also not optimum results so I look forward to any hints or help you may add to this article.
Look forward to your next update and photos when able.
Cheers,
Lance

That is a Super Build Lance.
Im sorry to say it may be my fault, I used Artist paintings as my REF and all my photos were probably pulled because of that, and that was my own fault.
I do appologize for that, and lesson learned
