I went to the trouble of using Alclad aluminium for my P-47, my intention was to simulate some light weathering which to me would be a dull finish? did I just waste my time trying for a high gloss...could have just used Tamiya silver whats the general consensus on light to moderate weathering on jugs towards the end of the war?

A little matt coat would probably do well as light weathering, with a dark grey wash in the panel lines. Aluminium goes grey as it weathers so the older you want it to look, the more grey it should be. You may want to vary the amount on different panels.

that is an interesting point about the fading to grey effect, my feeble attempt to use alclad left it not so shiny anyway it seems I missed the info alclad provides about using the airbrush like a paint brush, to lay down a thick coat of paint that nearly pools?

Here are a couple of really weathered airplanes. Your P-47 shouldn't look as horrible, but you can see how aluminium goes after oxydising for a while.
Yes, that's really bare metal, not paint. Russian weather is fierce and that Tupe has been out in it for 50 years...
