Very nice information. I hope that the accuracy will be at least similar to the Airfix kit. Well, let's wait now for the first available kits to judge the model.

Nice one Andy.
That PR [?] Hurricane with the desert camouflaged tail looks superb. Great seeing the moulds as well.
All the best.

This looks nice, I might just get one even though I build in 1/32 now, I'd like to try masks for the box art scheme as I reckon that, now that I can cut serials in 1/48, I will also be able to cut the skeleton.
( Thinks ...................I wonder if it's possible to tell if this kit is "Fatally Flawed" from the shots of the moulds )
There seems to be a nice Merlin engine in them there moulds

The price will be ... about 35Euro here in Germany ... it should better be way ahead of the Hasegawa at that charge. I have a sample on the way so I will know soon (hopefully)

all the best

"The PRM (Photografic
Reference Manual) is an
interesting element for
the modelers that are
looking for greatest
perfection and attention
to historical details."

In that case it would help to make an effort to gets things correct and not copy someones mistake.

The serial number of this Hurricane was P3700. Hurricane P3701 did not serve with 303 Squadron.

I can see a couple of these heading my way, as those Hasegawa Hurricanes are quite hard to get hold of.

It's difficult to tell for sure, but it looks as though the lower fuselage behind the wings might be a seperate part. This could avoid the nasty seam that plagues the Hasegawa kit, and allow them to issue the early hurricane without the ventral fin easily. If they have a seperate fuselage for the Mk.II, we could also see a Sea Hurricane.

Might we even see fabric wings and the concurrent marking options rather than just another RAF machine? It'll be interesting to find out

Love the bird in the PR colours. Is the other (decal) option Indian air force? Are the decals for the box-art image also going to be provided?

I know Kitmaker doesn't endorse comparative reviews, but I'd love to see a build feature comparing the various 1/48 Hurricane Mk I's... hint, hint, nudge, nudge... any takers???

Hi Rudi.
The insignia you're not sure about [orange and green] is actually Irish Air Corp.
All the best.

Thanks Tim. I wouldn't have associated the ying-yang symbol with Ireland - off topic, but what was the story behind it's use?

Am I correct in thinking "93" was Canadian built and supplied to the IAAC?

93 was P5176 that crash-landed in early 1942 and later purchased by the Irish Government. Part of the first production batch of 40 Hurricane Mk Is (P5170-P5209) built by the CC&F Montreal during 1939-40. The majority were shipped to the UK between March and November 1940. This batch was not correctly redesignated as Mk Xs but remained Canadian Mk Is.

The roundel is known as a 'Celtic Boss’. The first markings used by the Irish Air Corps were green, white and orange stripes. With the prospect of war looming, the lAC introduced a change to the national insignia. A roundel, comprising only green and orange elements, was applied to the fuselage and the upper wings. On the port fuselage the green segment usually faced forward and aft on the starboard and on the upper wings to port. The change appears to have been authorised in early 1939, as Magisters and Ansons were delivered, in February, with wing stripes, while Lysanders, which arrived in June, had the new roundels on the fuselage and upper wings. Other than on new deliveries, the 'stripe' marking remained until aircraft were overhauled and/or re-painted in 'wartime' colours of Dark Green and Dark Earth. There were some issues with identification, especially by ground troops, and in late 1940, the fuselage roundel gained a white background, usually in the form of a square.

In 1946, the Miles Martinets displayed 'handed' roundels applied to the fuselage and the upper wings, while the lower wings retained the tri-colour stripes. On the fuselage the green element faced left (forward) on both sides, while on the upper wings, the green faced inboard.
The entry of the Vampire T.ll into lAC service in 1956 heralded the last revision which is still in use. A new three colour roundel was applied to the fuselage and both upper and lower wings. The green element faces forward on the port fuselage and towards the rear on the starboard; on the upper wing; it faces port and starboard on the lower. Or to put it another way, the green 'teardrop' always 'rotates' in an anti-clockwise direction. Needless to say, cases occurred where the marking has been applied incorrectly. This occurred on Grumman Gulfstream IV 251, which was delivered in December 1991. Its under wing markings had the green element on the port wing facing port instead of starboard.

It is a brilliant idea to include a booklet with the kit! It is more brilliant to do less mistakes on the model like they did for their Reggiane 2002. Sometimes Italeri should have a look at the booklet BEFORE isuing their kits.

hi rowan,

i suppose it depends on how you look at it.
if you want a 1/48 hasegawa hurricane kit it will most likely cost you over £30 on ebay, i personally dont rate the airfix one but if you went to the trouble of making it better with etch and resin it will again cost about £30, and neither of those have an exposed engine.

i've done a pre order at £26.99........ i like a gamble!!!

all the best paul

Mmmmm, I won't be getting this if it's £30, but if someone else would like to give me a challenge and order masks for the box art scheme I'm game. I'll add a further 5% off to the 20% that Kitmaker Network members get to the first one to order :-)

Hi all,

I have received mine today. My first impressions are very positive. The decal sheet is impressive and printed by Cartograf. I have started to write a review already.
