As if I don't have enough to do already, I've been thinking of a possible new campaign. Next year, 2013, is the 75th anniversary of the commissioning of USS Enterprise, CV-6 (May 12, 1938). How do you think an "Enterprise" campaign might play?

It could be another of my cross-site campaigns. Any ship named Enterprise (including starships for the ModelGeek builders), any aircraft serving on an Enterprise so long as it carries markings from the ship, stuff like that. It would probably start on Jan. 1 and go to Dec. 31.

What do you all think? Too narrow for a campaign? Do you think it might draw enlistees? Just testing the waters here but I look forward to your input.

Thanks!

I think it has a lot of potential. I don't think it's too narrow of a topic. I like it.

I believe we have about eight people who have expressed interest so far. Anyone else? Remember, we're not starting this until the beginning of next year, but we need 10 to get officially on the list.

I think I've got some VF-1 Wolfpack decals for the F-14 - that first cruise was on the Enterprise, right?

If the markings you have are for that first cruise (1974-'80) then yes, that was Enterprise. Does that make 9?

Alright, it looks like we’ve reached the magic number! The following modelers have indicated interest in an Enterprise campaign:

Michael Satin – Enterprise CV-6
Sean Hadfield – aircraft
Frank
Bruce Miller – ship
Vance – aircraft
David Carlson – starship
Jeremy Coyle
Jonathan – sailing ship
Neil – aircraft
Richard Tonge

The stated build intentions are only that, intentions. I would think of starting this campaign on 1/1/13 so still plenty of time to change your minds and I won’t hold anyone to anything. Please let me know if you don’t want to participate, however, as we need 10 to get it approved by the administrators. Of course, others are always welcome to climb on board!

My concept of the rules would be:

1. Any scale, any era, any modeling medium (for those wooden ship types out there).
2. Must be Enterprise related, either a vessel that bore the name Enterprise or a vehicle/aircraft which operated from such vessel so long as it was in the colors and markings of the time it so operated. Also any person who served on such vessel so long as he/she is depicted as they appeared during that time.
3. Model can be up to 10% started (for the saps like me who take a stab at starting something then put it away to start something else. I’m running out of completely unstarted kits in my collection!)
4. One year to complete the campaign.
5. Enter as many times as you like but only one ribbon per modeler.
6. Honor the 75th Anniversary of the commissioning of the most important U.S. Naval ship of WWII, possibly ever. Oh, and have fun!

How do these sound to you all? I won’t actually submit this to the administrators for a few days so chime in if you have changes, criticisms, additions, etc. And thanks for agreeing with me that this could be a cool campaign!

cool, looks like we have a campaign!

my intention is to model Lt. Commander Richard Halsey Best's SBD Dauntless. Best was CO of VB-6, launching from the Enterprise during the battle of Midway.

Best was almost solely responsible for the sinking of the flagship of the Japanese fleet, the carrier Akagi, and later that day was likely responsible for driving home one of the 4 bombs that doomed the last of the operational Japanese carriers at Midway, the Hiryu.

Due to a malfunction with his oxygen system, Best was exposed to breathing caustic soda just before his first flight (the one during which he mortally wounded the Akagi). Complications from this grounded him in the days thereafter and for the rest of the war. He retired from the navy in 1944, lived a full life, and died in 2001 at the age of 92.

Best was awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross for the exceptional initiative and bombing skills he displayed during the Battle of Midway.

Well, we certainly have enough interest so I've submitted the proposal. While we wait, I messed around with a possible ribbon:

and small:

I know it's kind of specific and doesn't include starships, ealier vessels, etc., but given that CV-6's commissioning is what we're celebrating it seemed appropriate. Of course, other ideas cheerfully accepted!

Cool. I'm in. A ship model will be a nice winter project.

The Big E ribbon is very handsome, nicely done.

Yeah,

I have at least a half dozen kits that might qualify that are in need of an excuse to build. Color me interested.

Cheers,

Great to see so many people sign up already. Day one and we already have 12!

I went ahead and uploaded the ribbon I showed above 'cause I hate to see a campaign in the list with a generic ribbon, but I can always change it if the crew reaches a different decision.

Our campaign has taken on added poignancy with the end of the career of the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise CVN-65, scheduled for March, 2013. It will be sad to have no Enterprise in the Navy's inventory.

All right everyone, the campaign starts tomorrow. Can the administrator (Sam?) please lock this thread? The official campaign thread is here on Model Shipwrights, this being a campaign in honor of all Enterprises.
