I have had a break from modelling for some time due to ill health. Stupidly I sold my air brush equipment so now I want to get back into it, I am stuck with brush painting at the moment.

Would like to see your builds that have been brush painted to see what finish can be achieved

Tanky: I am glad you are getting back into modeling; I hope that means your health is improved.

Lady and gentleman, your brush painting is impressive! Will you tell us the brand(s) of paint used and the type of brush?

This is my F7F Tigercat, from the AMT kit. It's in 1/48scale. The plane, base, and pilot were all painted and weathered by brush.

It represents a 'Cat flown by the Marines during the Korean conflict. I used a True Details cockpit and corrected nose. Al

I use Testors Model Master, Humbrol and Xtracolor enamels, and Tamiya acrylics. The Japanese aircraft were in Tamiya, the British in Xtracolor and mostly the rest were either Testors or Humbrol, depending on what colour I needed at the time.

I use Squirrel or Camel hair brushes, mostly #2 or 3 round. For the really fine details I get down to 5- 0 and 10-0.

Al, I love the weathering on your Tigercat. The exhaust stains in particular are fantastic!

Tamiya 1:100 Me262
and Me163

I use a number of different acrylic paints. Citadel (from my warhammer days) and Formula P3 mostly, as they are inexpensive and easily accessible from the local comic book and boardgame store. They dry quickly and are easy to work with on the brush. I use a Tamiya rattle-can primer. Usually I use brushes in size 3 or 5 for the main blocks of paint, and 0-size for details.

Then again I have a airbrush set on my wishlist for christmas...

If you take a look at my gallery, every model is brush-painted. I've never owned an airbrush!

http://photos.kitmaker.net/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1920

I always use the best brushes that I can afford; artists brushes are better than those sold just for modellers. Sizes 2 and smaller are sable, the larger sizes are whatever comes to hand. Paints are Humbrol or Revell enamel and Tamiya or Revell acrylic. Just the same as with an airbrush, several thin coats are better than one thick one, and keep the brush strokes as long and even as possible.

Brushes are what every I get hold off but not the cheapest nor the most expensive most used sizes being 2, 000 and 00000.
Paints are Revell aquacolor, Aeromaster and Lifecolor acrylics

Wow..I'm impressed
From what I have seen, I think I will give brush painting a go, at least until I can afford to get another airbrush.
I will be using Vallejo acrylic..and really water down and do loads of thin coats and see what I can come up with. I think patience is going to be "KEY" here.

JPTRR: thanks ...I'm kinda of getting there with my health...still a long way to go but I will get there

Thanks to you all for posting your pics really enjoyed looking at them

Thanks Jessie, The exhaust stains are just careful dry-brushing. Starting with a light grey and then some darker shades of gray and brown layered on top. Al

Thank god i`m not alone in using brushes,i do our beloved hobby as an escape from the mundane world.I do`nt own an airbrush as i do`nt want to spend hours cleaning it after just a few minutes spraying.
If i have to paint large areas (i love doing 1/32nd scale aircraft)i makedo with rattle cans,i know this limits what schemes i can do,but as i said i do this for the pleasure and escapism of it.

This is really great to see!

I'm also a rattle can and brush painter. I like adding supper detail work to all of my models. I'm still up to learning how to use an airbrush, but its not at the top of my hobbly list.

I really want to get better at scratch building. I don't enter any contests. I just do it for me and my display case in my office.

We need to see more of all types of models and scales that are not airbrushed in Kit Maker Network. I feel as its an art and sometimes I get the feeling in some of the posts I read and newstand magazines on modeling, that all they talk about is airbrushing and if you don't have one, you wont produce a quality model.

Just my two cents.

Keep the photos coming and lets add more info about how you can improve on the artform and modelmaking.

Pictures don't appear in quoted text. It's just another one of our site's little "/features".
The airplane is a Westland Lysander built from the old Matchbox kit.

Frog, Airfix, Matchbox (reboxed by Revell) and Pavla did Lysanders in 1/72, Eduard/Gavaia in 1/48 and Matchbox (reboxed by Revell) in 1/32. You may need to look for second-hand kits for one these days.

Well, essentially, the edges are dry-brushed and the panel lines are post-shaded with chalk pastels. If you can find the Swing-Wing campaign there's a blow-by-blow description of the way I did the Flogger.

And it works on armour!
