After a string of excellent WW2 kits, Great Wall Hobby surprised the modelling community by releasing their first modern jet subject late last year. The bold move certainly paid off, because the resulting kit is a real cracker.

Hi, Rowan. The kit certainly is a wonder. I was amazed by the separate package containing the missiles. Never seen that before. Also it was kinda neat to have a repro of the box art included in its' own plastic sleve - sorta like a dinner mat. By all accounts, GWH did them selves proud. Hope they decide to make more. All the best.

Hi JT
Thanks for the reminder - I forgot to mention how the missiles are packed, so I've updated the text and pics.
All the best

Kind of a silly question given Russian/Soviet units, but does anyone know if the markings for the Russian A/C are correct? I just can't find a lot of reference to those units. Thanks!

Yes, both are correct. You can find period photos of both blue 91 and blue 92 from the naval unit - those are circa 1986.
I can also find a photo of blue 44 in one of my books, that subject dates around 1991.
GWH seems to really do their homework on their kits - and that's not just limited to the outstanding "plastic" contents of the kit (which have gotten better with each release).
If you want more options, Linden Hill Imports makes an excellent decal set for both the 9-12 (late) and 9-13. Wish there were a few more options!
Alas decals for Russian subjects are scarcer than some of us would like!
HTH!

This is outstanding - everything their F-15E isnt - accurate, well fitting and will make a great OOB build. Those missiles are a new benchmark IMHO.

I hear GWH is due to release the Late Variant with some special markings. Does anyone know if the release will include the "corrected" parts (pylons, intake parts) from the early-type release? if not, I can handle the intakes but how can I get a sprue of the corrected pylons for my late-version? -HK sends

Rowan,
This has to be one of, if not your best in box review to date. It is that good. As for the review Subject, I've only modeled American and Allies aircraft since returning to the hobby several years ago. But GHW's 1/48 Mig 29 Fulcrum 9-12 late-type has tipped the scales for me. It's just to good of a kit not to buy & build.
