Skip the Italeri kit. It's not too bad, but IMO it has some shape and dimensional issues.

If the "newer tool" (read late-80's) Hasegawas are out of your price range, you may want to consider the older tool Hasegawas, which were effectively the "top of the heap" until the release of the newer tool versions.

Jeff! Hasegawa F-14s aren't impossible to find second-hand. I have done (or rather almost done, the second one isn't finished yet) two, the build blogs are here:

F-14A and F-14D.

I have heard that the Hobbyboss kit is quite good, I have never seen it though!

You might want to go for the ACADEMY F-14. It is cheap, and it is a copy of the old-tool Hasegawa (which was very detailed and had a very good fit) but reworked to have recessed panel lines. The cockpit is a bit simple though.

If you find a second hand Fujimi or new-tool Hasegawa for a good price go for it, otherwise the Academy might be a good choice.

Fujimi! Without question! You can sometimes find them in sales and from some logical ebay sellers.
