I know, I know, probably a stupid question. I've never used acrylic paints. I assume you still have to scrape the paint off the mating edges of pre painted parts?

Yes. Since solvent glues work by affecting the plastic, anything that covers it will prevent the glue from working. It's always best to develop the habit of applying glue to bare plastic, no matter which glue and paints you're using.
