Who is your hero?
Mine is Yuri Gagarin.
He slipped the surly bonds of Earth. To fall endlessly above. The first, alone in the last untouched frontier.

Probably Jimmy Doolittle. Since this is one of my heroes in the aviation arena. I think he was a good commander and in many ways a fine human being as well. If there was any U.S. air force commanding officer I could have met it would of been him!! Russell

well I thought of one. A Danish guy called Paul Elvstrøm.
He was (and still is I suppose) a terrific sailboat racer, won numerous olympic medals, world championships and so on over a lifetime of achievement, but mostly he was supremely confident in his own ideas and abilities, endured whatever he needed to, invented and built what ever wasn't available, and never paid heed to any discouragement. He wrote a couple of books about his life and methods that I read as a youngster, that influenced me alot.

Toss up between 3: Bull Hallsey for fearless leadership; Billy Mitchell for his convictions when the brass punished him for it, even though he was right; and Jimmy Doolittle for his vision and leadership, and he had a PhD in aeronautical engineering from MIT.

Hmm.. As pilot? Probably I'll go with Günther Rall or Ilmari Juutilainen. Both are rather stubborn fliers who fought with whatever they have whenever they could. I like insistent people.
Edit...hmmm or I can go with Bruce Dickinson:}

My Mum - for putting up with me all these years!
Apparently, Guy Gibson was a relation on my father's side of the family, so I reckon I should mention him too.
All the best
