Has anyone built a 1/144 E3? What are your opinions?
Stay away from the Revell kit; the plastic inside is the old Revell 707-120, not the proper -320 that you need. The Minicraft kit is a -320, but it's got its
own share of problems. If you want a really accurate E-3, steal the radome from a Revell or Minicraft kit and put it on an
Authentic Airliners 707.
(edit)
I forgot about this one. If you're not afraid of vac/resin kits, Welsh Models does a
Sentry AEW.1 which will be very accurate.
When once you have tasted flight you will walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward.

Jessie, what problems are there with the Minicraft E3. I would build one wheels up.

The plastic is exactly the same as the Minicraft 707-320, which if you read the review I linked to, you will find has a number of shape and fit problems. A short summary of the Minicraft 707's problems:
Cockpit roof line is much too bulged;
Vertical fin is slightly narrow and swept back on the trailing edge too much;
Tailplane roots on the fuselage are fictional and need to be sanded off;
Ventral fin is only half as deep as it should be, although this is not a problem for the E-3 given that it's not equipped with the ventral fin;
Landing gear bays are entirely devoid of detail (not really a problem for you), main landing gear doors need their fold line scribed on;
Engine to pylon and pylon to wing fit can best be described as "approximate";
The fit in general is nowhere near as precise as one could wish for.
None of these problems are beyond the skills of a competent modeller, but you do need to be aware of them in order to correct them.
When once you have tasted flight you will walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward.
For there you have been, and there you will always long to return.

Thank you for the analysis. I was thinking about buying one.

Don't let my warning stop you. I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to do a decent model from it

love the concept of the ribbon.
I wonder if the smurf could be a bit sharper so it looks like a smurf in the smaller size?

That was the only flying Smurf picture I found when I first searched for smurfs and airplanes. I'll see if I can find another with better resolution.

This one's a bit better, but it's still very difficult shrinking a complicated design to such a small size. This is why the best ribbons are simple designs.

Jessie,
OUTSTANDING !!!! I love the 2nd ribbon, now we're really getting into the "Proper Spirit" ! It will be a proud addition to my ribbon line up.
And the larger one you display....any chance of labeling it "Smurf Scale" and leaving it huge for a banner for us to attach to our signatures ? Just a thought, but between now and December, when folks keep seeing that banner, they get into the spirit.
Just a suggestion......."May the Smurfs be with you ! "
Take care........................Bruce

yeh 20x50 is a very small space to work in! Its like 1/144 scale for graphic design.
The character looks really good in this version, no more jpg jiggle. Can you adjust the background up or down to give him some contrast..

I flooded the background with white to make our Smurf stand out better
Signature banners are a different size, so I had to do some cropping if it wasn't to end up distorted.

Jessie,
We all really appreciate your work with our emblems. I know I speak for most on this. We'll have to see what the majority think on these, and then go from there.
I just think its Great to see this kind of enthusiasm for 1/144th scale. We have plenty of time to think about our builds, or perhaps "warm-up" with a few builds first.

I think the last little smurf on the white background is quite nice.
Even though I can't take Smurfs anymore after the kids watched them on television, over and over and over.

Cool Smurf! I like it! Just one question: Is it the proper 1/144 scale? Otherwise we really can't accept it...

Jessie,
Needless to say, your banner definitely states what our build is all about. And as you can see, I think it fits quite well. Thanks from all of your fellow "Smurfs"!

Hi all,
thanks a lot for the warm welcome. Aeroscale aint a new site for me because I'm reading it every day. But this time I'm going active by posting and participating in a campaign.
Jessie, I like the Smurf ribbon very much and naming it Smurf Scale is really ... I don't know it in English - in German it's schlumpfig, because those small blue guys are called "Schlümpfe".
So it's: Lasst uns ein paar schlumpfige Schlumpfzeuge schlumpfen!
And have a lot of fun anyhow.
See you all, HP
