Hello all!
I hail from the Armorama area of the KM site and am proposing a "where you served" campaign. This campaign would be either you, as a vet, where you served OR someone you know who served.
The idea is to capture our memories as vets or honor those that served during war time. Please keep in mind, this would not be about AFV, airplanes, figures...it would really be about capturing a moment of service. Something that means a lot to you or to someone you know.
If you'd like more information, please head to current thread on Armorama and post there. I'll be submitting the form probably this weekend, so everyone has time to join in. Dates for the campaign have not been set yet.
Thanks!

My uncle, who recently died, was the quartermaster on the USS Jallao for it's last few patrols during WWII. Unfortunately it wasn't until about a year before he died that my uncle would talk about his service during WWII at all, but I have since been thinking about doing a model of the Jallao using the Revell/Monogram USS Lionfish as the basis (both being a Baleo class submarine, which are basically improved Gato class submarines)
Anyway, does that fit the requirements for this campaign?

Vance, of course it does! Like I said, this is more about capturing the service than anything else. Glad to have you join in!

Balao conversion kits are made by Nautilus Models for the sail http://nautilusmodels.com/180-003.htm and Iron Bottom Sound for masts http://ibs.eastcoastarmory.com/Csets.htm to convert the Gato Revell 1/178 Submarine.

ah, thanks for the info. I take it from that statement that the Revell Lionfish model is really a Gato-class. If that is the case and i have to do a conversion anyway, I'll think a bit about which scale to go with.

With photos of you uncles boat you can build a very good replica of the USS Jallao from any of the Gato kits, and scales. The Trumpeter 1/144 scale kit is very good and not to large. With some diagrams you can also DIY the sale with a razor saw and build your own mast. Good photos from the year and month are the key. The Gato / Balao class submarines were almost all unique conversions over their life span.
