Now that's something you don't see everyday!
I'm guessing that its somewhere in the south pacific and its being moved to a new home. Perhaps a suitable airfield for it to land safely on is not ready yet.
The raft is two DUKW's lashed together with tubing, with planks lashed to those that the P-38 is resting on.
It would make a great diorama!

just what i was thinking
someone suggested it may have been craned off a liberty ship or transport and used this to get to shore...
i'm not a p38 expert but it looks like an early model to me?
cheers paul

Nor me, but it looks like a D or E. Not sure who makes a decent one in kit form. There is the Airfix but I remember it needs a lot of filler. 1/72 would be the best way to go about this, if only because of the availability of DUKW kits at that scale.

I have seen similar pictures, and in those cases, it was to ferry an aircraft across a river (or sometimes lagoon) from where it was disembarked from a ship to where the airfield was. I know this was done at Guadalcanal for example, and the raft was eventually replaced by a pontoon bridge.

In the Pacific aircraft were transported on the decks of jeep carriers.
USS Kalinin Bay
Saipan Feb 1945
The 318 FG, in June 1944, was shipped from Hawaii to Saipan and flew off the deck of the carrier.
