I am looking for a set of decals for doing the 'Lady be Good' B-24 in either 1/48 or 1/72. I am hoping a set did exist at one time. I would like to build her before she became a famous crash site in the desert. Any info would be greatly appreciated. My skills at making my own set is very less then desirable.

good luck. The only photos I have seen of her are from the book "The Lady Be Good: Mystery Bomber of World War II" by Dennis E. McClendon The photos in the book are of the crash site, with one photo of the crew...standing by the rear turret. No help there. At least the painting on the cover shows that she was OD over Neutral Gray.
So as I said, as far manufactured decals go, good luck.
One afterthought, contact Kitsworld Model Decals in the U.K., Nigel is always looking for new subjects to do. He's done a bunch of B-24D's already.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any contact info? I have been searching off and on for sometime starting with posting on old rec.models.scale usenet site years ago. Someone said that Mike Grant decals did a set but I never got a reply nor found any confirmation if such a set exists.

About 20 years ago, I saw a book on modeling in the library, and if memory serves me, it was a red cover and had the complete story of how the modeler made the Lady Be Good diorama. You might check to see if your library has it, or knows where to get it. It had a lot of British terms in it, like: plasticard. 20-thou, etc and it had several other dioramas, so it might have been on dioramas rather than airplanes but still...

I bought the book when it came out in the early '80's. That book and then the Movie 'Sole Survivor' got my interest in doing this subject. Just wish I was as good at hand painting like Mr. Paine is in his dioramas or I would not be posting this.

Robb, I produce masks to order so I need as many references as you can muster. Drop me an email at [email protected] and I will send you an order form. I can't give you a price at the moment as I need to know what is involved but, in 1/72 scale, they should be no more than £12.50. KitMaker members get a 10% discount

I will see what I can dig up. I did find an 'After the Battle' mag that featured her. For an idea just google 'Lady be Good'. 99.9% will be her when she was found in the desert.

So my quest for references begins...

Not sure if artwork exists. I will be ordering some back issues of 'After the Battle' Magazines. There is 2 issues that reference the Lady be Good. #25 and #89. I can order them (US distributor) from www.rzm.com.

I will also check the US Air Force Museum to see if they have anything. http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=2475

Other then painting this can be the worse part of modeling

If you decide to make your own decals, the color of the script is Chrome Yellow, (FS595b 13538 or 33538); if you're lookig for a lighter yellow (FS 595b 33655), I can give you the RGB codes for both of those color choices.

For 13538 (RGB code is 249/176/0); for 33538 (RGB code is 255/183/0). For 33655 (RGB code is 255/202/0); it's Blue Angels Yellow.

I'll go through my fonts... I have over 700 on my computer, so it might take a bit but I should be able to find a similar, if not exact, font for you. If I do, I'll need your email to send you the font so you can install it on your own computer. PM your email when and if I find it.

I also have USAAF font for WWII and RAF/RCAF font for the same time period.

Great.. Let me know when you have it all together and I will send you an email to get the payment going. Also let me know if I still need to look for the standard decals like the national insignias and/or the tail numbers or are they going to be masks. This will be my first attempt at doing masking instead of decals. Sort of looking forward to it.
