Any idea what those bizar whilte lines in front of the cockpit were for?

Early Corsairs had a problem with minor fuel leaks from the tank which was right in front of the cockpit, so in order to stop leaks from fouling the windscreen white tape used to seal the fuselage panels around the fuel tank.

The cowling gills on top of the fuselage were fixed in the closed position, to avoid the deposition of oil on the windscreen. For similar reasons, the joints of the fuselage fuel tank in front of the cockpit were often covered with sealing tape. These are the white lines you see on a lot of F4U's.

Bernard, nicely built F4U-1A Corsair. The Tamiya kit is just super. I just finished the same kit myself to add to my Corsair collection.

Very nice build Bernard, excellent looking bird. I would be remiss to not encourage you to get yourself one of their new 1/32 masterpieces. I just got mine today actually and it is an absolute feat of engineering and precision.
