I've been (very) slowly knocking together the HiPM F-51H and I'm close to decaling time but I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. The kit offers two options from the Mass. Air National Guard, from what the instructions call the "Irish" and "Polish" squadrons. They appear to be differentiated by the trim options, either green or red on the wing and tail tips. My problem is that they also have white striped spinners, but I can't tell what the background colour is given HiPM's printing on the instruction sheet. You're supposed to be able to tell which shade of dark grey dots matches their colour key, but it's very difficult to do so. The spinners could be green and white, red and white or black and white and I'm certain that if I guessed I'd get it wrong.

Does anyone here know how they were painted? Better yet, does anyone have a pointer to pictures?

Jessica, I did a few Google searches on the Massachusetts National Guard P-51H. The only pictures I was able to find showed the spinners as solid dark green or solid black.

Here is the link to the 104th fighter wing of the Mass Air National Guard home page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/104th_Fighter_Wing

Hopefully there is a link there can point you to a person or to photos that will answer your questions.

You did better than I did then; all the pictures I found were other states' F-51s. Your link eventually led me to the Wing's "contact us" page, so let's see what the Public Affairs Officer has to say...

Also, there is a guy named Ken Middleton, he is on FB, and is a WEALTH of knowledge. He has also built and painted a few models of the wings aircraft. All seem to have solid green spinners. Here is his page... definitly worth a look through his work.

Lastly, I am about 25 minutes away from Otis ANGB where this unit was stationed till it was de activated in 2008. The unit does an intel job now, but if there is anything there you can look at, I can probably get the pictures if you tell me what you get from the PAO

Also, I cant confirm yet, but the Irish and Polish are probably references to squadrons at two different bases. Irish was probably the squadron that came from Logan field in Boston, to Otis ANGB on the cape, and I would GUESS that the Polish Squadron was a unit from either Hanscom field, or Westover, further west in central MA

Another contact for you. My club did a collection of all their MANG aircraft about 10 years ago. They provided a lot of reference material and might be able to help you: Massachusetts National Guard Museum

While there may have been some P-51's flying through Westover, heck, I've seen everything from A-6 Intruders to P-3 Orions to U2's, as well as their staples, the b-52, KC-135,C-23, C-C-130, and now C-5. The main prop fighter was the P-47. Westover was a full SAC Air Force Base until it was demoted to an Air Force Reserve base in the early 70's, some say as a result of Massachusetts not giving Nixon a unanimous victory in 1972. Barnes, also in Western Mass, is currently home to the 104th FG MANG. Barnes has housed P-47D, P-51D, F-94A, F-86H, F-100D, F-84F, A-10A and now the F-15A's that used to fly out of Otis.
