Howdy,
Pardon the interuption in the 'wingy-thingy' area here but...
For a number of years, I've been trying to find out what the differences are between the -300 and the -400 series of Boeing 747. Other than the optional winglets on the -400, both have the same length stretched upper deck and both have the same power plant options, and both look exactly the same externally. I've written to Boeing, have cruised the internet, I read "Airlines" magazine faithfully and I still can't find the answer(s). (Boeing has never replied...oh, if they only knew how much I love Boeing aircraft....)
I'm stumped, and I'm hoping that someone here can answer this for me.... paleeze!

Sorry Kevin,I can't help with this, airliners are'nt my thing. I would have said the winglets were the difference.............? I do think the 747 is one awsome aircraft though :-)

I have had a look at http://trolls.troll.no/ebakke/b747.html, the site says the winglets are the only external diference. However the internal structure has been the subject of major redesign as it now carries more fuel, has a higher MTOW, and longer range.

There's one more thing that sets them apart. The Cost!!! All the money you save because of the winglets, you spend on the payments!

Thanks everybody!
Seems that it's basically a structual redesign from the -300 series. I had also posted this question over on Hyperscale and there's some really great replies there. Couple of pages back by now.
Thanks again for your help!! Ah, if I could only get my fingers out of the way and build me a model of one. If I could, I'd have a model of every commercial Boeing built. Ain't nothing prettier than a Boeing!
