I have been wanting to start a Gallery H-34 ever since it came out and so even though I have a few other projects going I started one.

the first thing I wanted to tackle is the intake screening on the nose. Gallery have given us some great brass bits but they left the hole closed so first thing i did was open up the holes and then glue the brass on. one thing however you need to do is to pre shape the brass on the nose prior to cutting out the hole to insure that the shape is transferred over to the screening.

more on the cabin and cockpit, Gallery have chosen not to include the collective pitch controls so they were added from plastic stock.

That's a very surprising omission, especially in that scale.

I know right, it is a great model but it has some wierd stuff going on.
1.the intake screening on nose is open on only the lower side screens.
2. the tail folds but not the main rotors.
3.the side windows in the cockpit are molded in place with the windshield frame.
4. the lack of cyclic controls.

over all I still love the kit and all this can be corrected with not much fuss it is just that you would expect more from such a great kit when you open the box.

again I want to say to all who may want a 1/48th scale H-34 the Gallery kit is the one to get, just a few things you will need to model, and that is what it is all about.

I am also building the Revell H-34 and using a Cobra S-58T conversion nose on it so I am not opposed to doing some work when it is in front of me.

Gallery plese dont take this as negative, and keep sending us such nice models of Helicopters to build.

Sure it was a slip, the controls missing are the Collectives not the Cyclics.

Very nice beginning, I have the two already released, and see a third is on the go, US Army version.

Perhaps they did that deliberately so the modeller could do just as you did and form the screen in place over a solid backing? Strange that they wouldn't point out in the instructions that you can carve it out afterwards. Perhaps they assume that advanced modellers would do that as a matter of course and beginners would just paint it black?

Whichever, it's almost comforting to know that kits are still being made with room for improvement. It might almost be boring to have nothing but perfect models to build. Where's the challenge in that?

Jessica
I think you are correct and I agree that we do need something to do on the model to make it our own. And as I said before it is a great kit and I am really enjoying the build, just cant wait to get back on it when I get home from work. by the way I spend work time working on aircraft also. They are just a little bigger.

Jess you are right on Target with that thought and I think they did not say to cut it out in the instructions as it would be too hard for new modelers to do without damaging the model and getting frustrated.

well said Jess!

the cockpit windows are molded to the frame and the clear parts are separate so to have them open you must cut the frames out and then glue the clear part into it.

I added back cushions to the pilots seats with epoxy putty and the instrument panel was sanded down in preparation to use the Eduard set to detail the cockpit

Doug, a very impressive build so far.

I've always had a fascination with helicopters, but for some strange reason just never modeled any. Going to try my hand at one this spring for sure.

Looking great so far, Doug. I have the Navy version of this kit, but I would like to model an SH-34 with the correct anti-submarine equiptment. Does anyone know if any aftermarket companies have come out with with any resin products to do so?
