Tamiya lacquer based gray primer is my choice for literally all modeling media. Works great with plastic, epoxy, CA glue, paper/cardboard, and framing on vacuum form canopies.
I've never had any issues with it other then the smell. I shoot it in a homemade paint booth that fits into the window in my modeling/computer room. It's the only time I use it.

agree.
Tamiya Fine Surface Primer(L) is all I ever use, and on anything.
edit to add, an exhaust fan, and a powerful one at that, is a blessing. I quote "contains dimethyl ether butyl acetate"
- one has only so many brain cells to give for ones art....
