Hi all
Putting up for discussion a propsal toward the end of 2015 (September onward) for a 12 month build based around the History Channel's Dogfight programme. The programme depicts air-to-air combat from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Six Day War, Yom Kippur, Gulf War and even possible future dogfights. It also includes aircraft vs ships eg Bismark vs Swordfish and what can be described as a Naval Dogfight in Taffy 3 against the Battleship Yamato in the Battle off Samar.
Some of the match ups are:
SPAD S XIII vs Fokker DVII and LVG C VI
F-86 Sabre vs MiG-15
P-51 Mustang vs Bf 109
F-4 Phantom vs MiG-17
P-38 vs Bf 109
F-4 Phantom vs MiG-21
P-40 vs Ki-27 Nates, Ki-21 Sallys and Ki-43 Oscars
F4F Wildcat vs. Mitsubishi Zero, F1M "Pete", D3A "Val", and Ki-43 "Oscar".
F6F Hellcat vs Mitsubishi Zeroes
F-8 Crusader vs. MiG-17s and MiG-21s.
Swordfish vs Bismark
SBD Dauntless vs. A6M Zero
B-17 Flying Fortress vs. A6M Zeroes & a Ki-46 "Dinah"
F-105 Thunderchief vs. North Vietnamese Air Force MiG-17
Israeli Air Force Mirage III vs. Egyptian Air Force MiG-17 & MiG-19
Israeli Air Force F-15 Eagle vs. Syrian Air Force MiG-21.
Kamikaze vs USS St Lo; USS Laffey
P-47 vs Fw-190 and Bf 109
MiG 17 vs A1 Skyraider
Mirage III vs Hawker Hunters
Mirage III vs Sukhoi Su-7
Nesher vs MiG-21
Albatros D III vs SPAD VII
Fokker Triplane vs SE5a
F6F Hellcat nighfighter vs A6M2 Rufe
P-61 Black Widow vs Me 410
F3D Skyknight vs MiG-15
F-15 Eagles and F-117 Nighthawks vs MiG-29s
American F-4 Phantoms, A-6 Intruders, and A-7 Corsairs vs North Vietnamese MiG-21s, MiG-19s, and Mig-17s
An EF-111 Raven vs Iraqi Mirage F-1
F-15 Eagles vs Iraqi MiG-25s, MiG-23s and MiG-29
F-22 Raptors vs Mikoyan MiG-29s, Sukhoi Su-30s and Dassault Rafales with the B-1R missile truck
Anyways short story long (by the looks) would there be interest in a campaign of modelling the pair of dogfighters?
A fuller description of each dogfight can be found here:

Interesting proposal. I'll have to give it some thought.

I like the concept.
But using the HC's 'Dogfights' as the theme, it gives a lot of build choices, reaching across from both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East conflicts.
You could even do Fairy Swordfish against the Bismark, Helldivers, Avengers and Hellcats against the Yamato if you want to base eligibilty on episode content.
Wikipedia has episodes of both seasons well descibed:

Interesting concept. Would one of the two models be allowed if they were previously built?

Would the models need to be in the finish of the relevant combatants or just the aircraft type?

Uau, I like this idea, though we had a previous campaign that picked a similar concept, based on the Osprey book collection.
I would love to build the P-47D vs the FW 190A-6 or A-5... Radial vs Radial
Cheers
Pedro

This does raise an interesting concept, a large dogfight using small scale aircraft like the 1/350 scale carrier aircraft from the Far East. You could even force perspective by having 1/700 fighting in the background whilst 1/200, 1/144 or even larger fought in the foreground. The mind boggles

Aeroscale had this campaign back in 2006 and it was a lot of fun! I'm all for it!

Ouch! My brain hurts just thinking about it. A 1/700 scale fur-ball!

I would try and finish it in the revlevant combatants but if not able to at least in the marking as close as possible. ie the F4s and Crusaders in Vietnam era markings against the Migs in North Vietnam markings.

Clinton Johnson and Charles Hartman down a MiG-17 with propeller-driven A-1 Skyraiders was in the series so it would be in.

It seems like I have one of the combatants, but not the other. I have a Mirage III, and A Mig-17, but I was going to do the Mig-17 in NVAF. Could I do an Egyptian Mig-21?
I have a F4F Wildcat; I would need to get a KI-43 Oscar.

Luckily the HC is re-running alot of the epiodes now and you can get some off you tube.
I'll be doing some research this week.

Also, if you're a stickler for accuracy, don't realy on the programs depiction of the aircraft as a reliable source.
For example, for the "Ambushed" episode, I was researching Robin Olds' P-38J 'Scat III' that the program mentioned. Turns out the coloring was wrong and it may been 'Scat II', not III on the profiled mission.
The program shows olive drab camoflage and invastion stripes where for the dated of the profiled mission has several sources showing it as Scat II in natural metal finish.
There was as Scat III, but different sources place the two 'Scats' on the same mission dates.
What is modeling without it's research?

PrickleHead,
By my count you have enough people interested to get this one approved. Write up a proposal and I'll see if I can talk the notoriously absent minded administrator into having a look.

While you're still working on the proposal, could I suggest an addition with A Falklands Conflict flavour?
Having recently finished a Sea Harrier (FAA campaign), I quite fancy modelling one of their Argentinian adversaries, which could be a Pucara, Mirage III, Delta Dagger or A-4 Skyhawk.
Any thoughts?

This campaign is APPROVED!
It will run from 1 Sept. 2015 through 31 August 2016, so plenty of time it think about what you want to do and then do it.
You can enlist here.
Looking forward to it!
