I am looking for a 1/48 scale MK 101 to replace the kit supplied gun in my Hasagawa Hs 129. The closest I can come are resin sets meant for the Bf110C-6. I want to do a North African aircraft.

Could I use the gun, specifically the barrel, for my Henschel? Obviously the gondola is completely different, but that raises the question for me as to whether the gun was at all redesigned as well, since the Eduard brassin version for their 110 looks really long compared to what would fit under the 129.

Any help would be appreciated.

Come on guys, I see a bunch of people have viewed my question, but no one has an opinion? I know there are people on here much more informed than I, someone must have an idea!

Help me out, please!

Hs 129 went to North Africa?

I would have thought that by the time the Hs 129 was in (limited) production) the Germans had exited North Africa.

Apart from the fact it would have been very vulnerable in that air combat environment. Not that it wasn't on the Eastern front, but the Allied forces were far more aggressive in a smaller theatre that was North Africa.

But I could have my thinking corrected, you learn someting new every day.

PS the pics in this doc may help?

It was a freaking monster of a system, I never realised how much of monster.

Pity they put such tiny engines in the aircraft.

Stooge, that's a 7,5cm Pak.the MK 101 is smaller.

RB Models an Schatton have Brass barrels IIRC

Cannot comment on Eduard or C-6 .. maybe John Vasco has a clue.

Cheers

Here's a nice picture of one captured by the Allies in Tunisia. All I know about it is what's in the caption.

Steffen, the Pak looked way more interesting than the 101.

Brian, yep that is solid evidence and I stand corrected.

As an aside is that an Eastern Front camo scheme rather than a Desert scheme?

Hi Dominic,

Just read your post. 2 cents - many MK 101 had no gondola, just plain gun instalement. The gun is identical to the one used on a handfull bf.110 C-6. Cavalier also produces some nice resin pieces of this weapon

If you mean in the pic that is attached, it is sand yellow squiggles sprayed over the standard continental splinter scheme. The other desert schemes were sand with either green or brown blotches. At the time the Hs129 was in Africa it was already upgraded to the Mk101 30mm, next upgrade was the Mk103 which had a higher rate of fire, after that was the 7.5mm cannon in the diagram, now that was a rare bird and not too many saw combat. Also, there were trials with a 50mm cannon and even a downward firing mortar system.

The Schatton is the Mk103 barrel. RB Models has the 5cm but no Mk101 or Mk103.

That's good news, because the Eduard Brassin Mk101 for the 110C-6 looks gorgeous! Wouldn't mind have an excuse to show it off, seems a shame to cover it all up with a gondola.

My bad, thought of the 2cm KWK 30 which looks similar but is of course a smaller calibre (also nothing found at Armourscale and Aber) .. still I stronly believe I have seen a set somewhere...

I keep looking

all the best

"If you mean in the pic that is attached, it is sand yellow squiggles sprayed over the standard continental splinter scheme"

I read the squiggle colour as a winter white over the standard continental splinter scheme.

But fair call, it could be sand within the constraints of my eyes and colour photography of the day and my laptop screen.

It sure looks like sand squiggles to me.

Yeah, that's probably just an issue with the tint or screen settings for your laptop. It's definitely a sand yellow, regardless the books I have on the Hs129 show color plates of this aircraft with the sand yellow.

Personally, I don't trust my airbrush skills enough to attempt it. I still can't seem to get a good thinner ratio to prevent spattering!! I'm using an Iwata HP that I clean meticulously after each use, so no blaming the tools!

On a related point, I have always been interested in doing a Tamiya 1/48 He-219, but have been intimidated by the hopelessly intricate (for me) dot camo schemes on these A/C. So when Owl recently released a decal set showing an He-219 in an overall solid light grey, which reportedly shot down five four-engine RAF bombers in a single evening, I bought that puppy immediately!

Oh wow! the He219 is my other dream kit!! I'm in the same boat as you with the paint scheme. I've been to the Udvar Hazy Center at Dulles and seen the 219 fuselage there with the light grey squiggles, and I've seen it done by people much better than me, but I'm way too intimidated. Now that you tell me about the all grey, I may pluck up my courage and give the kit a shot. Is the decal set for the 1/48 kit or that giant 1/32 kit? That one looks like a beaut!

Here's a Hannants product link to Heinkel He 219 V9 G9+FB (W.Streib) in 1/48, http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/OWLS4828. They also have it in 1/32. It's easy to find if you input the A/C code.

Enjoy.
