I have another question for you,
I found one each end of the tops of the wings something that looks like a light lens.
I have done some searching around for pics and data and the only thing I could find so far was on f4ucorsair.com.
The technical data shows these as 'formation lights' but don't tell me what color(s) they are.
Can anyone tell me please? Are they both the same color or are they different for each wing?

Thanks again and good modeling,
Wayne

In my Otaki kit of the corsair it shows the port wing light to have a red bulb and the starboard wing light to have a green bulb.

Mmmmm, I think what Martin is refering to might be termed navigation lights. They are these colours so a pilot can tell if a plane is heading towards or away from him. These lights are, usually, on the very front wing tip. You say that these "formation lights are on the top of the wing? What Mk corsair is it? If they are formation lights (these are lights for aircraft to keep formation in low light conditions) they may just be white lights. It is of course possible that they perform the function of formation lights but are the same colour as the nav lights, but positioned so pilots flying along side can see them? (If they could be see from behind it would confuse the issue as regards whether the plane is flying towards or away from the observer). For this reason I believe formation lights not to be the same colour as navigation lights. (I could be wrong of course)
I mention nav lights in my Corsair article Pacific Corsair
Sorry I hope I haven't confused the issue.

I've just had a look at a Corsair article in Scale Aviation Modeller international. There is no indication of "formation lights", however this is an article on FAA and Commonwealth Corsairs. Looking at the instructions in my Tamiya F4U-1D they show what I think are the lights you refer to. They are on top of the wing, some way in from the end and near the aileron hinge line. The instructions give these as X-4 which is blue, the nav lights are, as Martin says Green and Red. If your model is a F4U-D then blue could be the answer. Personally I still have my doubts, because starboard nav lights could be blue or green, so there could still be a potential problem, if flying with other aircraft (that have a blue starboard nav light). Unless of course they are strobes, as I think modern planes have?
It's just a couple of lights It's this sort of frustrating detail that gets me pinned down, If you do find the difinative answer I would be very interested

Thanks guys,
It is this kind of detail that I like to try and figure out that makes things fun.
Holdfast: you are right - they are on top of the wings, near the tips, towards the back. They looks just like the three lights on the bottom of the right wing. When I looked at f4ucorsair.com all they listed them as were 'formation lights'. They gave the colors of all the other lights on the corsair but not these. Plus - the technical diagram they show - I am not really sure what version of Corsair that really was????

Thanks again and good modeling,
Wayne
