Hi all, as per a few of my previous posts I am trying to find out the final letter of his hurricane when he was shot down. I have got in contact with the author of "Australia's few and the Battle of Britain" which was an amazing help. She replied within ten minutes, but was not sure of the final letter of his plane R4097. The squadron code was VK, but I'm still unsure of the final letter. If anyone knows or has any references please share. Any help greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Nick

Nick, no answer I'm afraid but I have entertained myself poking about for the cause. Some links follow which really tell you what you already know. the last link may give the answer but I was to tight this AM to pay the fee and join.

Possibly the answer will be found here, but a fee needs to be paid.

As an alternative answer you could ask here. Do not worry about searching it, I have already tried.

You ultimate answer maybe to follow thru the detail on this sheet and write to the RAF Museum.

Bump! I am about to start making the airfix 1/72 hurricane I have based on a 238 sqn hurricane. If anyone has any information regarding the missing letter VK-? It would be greatly appreciated. I have the xtra decal raf ww2 code letters for this scale. If I couldn't source the number I was going to put an s or w for the final letter as they are his initials. Thoughts?????

I have just started reading Combat Codes and it would seem very unusual for the letter to be selected by a regular pilot.

I think the answer is trawling through images like this to find or select a letter.

Nick, I put this query to a friend who might have the right contacts in the UK. The response was not an answer but they suggested to contact the R.A.F. Air Historical Branch, There is a branch in AUS.
