Hi! As in the title, I was wondering if there were any appearance differances between the D edition and Q model, especially for the Russian AF craft. As far as I can tell, the only things I see are the 37mm nose barrel and either none to 2 mg's per wing, or no wing guns and one 50cal pod per wing. Anything I'm missing in external views?
Many thanks in advance!
Cheers!

The P-39D had the 20mm nose cannon and 2 x .50cal machine guns in streamlined fairings. The P-39Q had the 37mm nose cannon and 2 x .50cal machine guns with fairings above the nose. P-39D's had the .30cal wing guns, they were omitted in all Q's. Most but not all Q's had the .50cal pods installed instead. Some had no wing guns at all.

Some D's had the 12 stack exhaust, all Q's had the 6 stack. Some Q's had vent fairings on the side of the nose, you'll have to check references for your plane.

P-39Q-21 were all sent to the Free French and had 4 blade props. 500 of the 700 P-39Q-25's were sent to the Soviet Union and also had 4 blade props. The other versions of the P-39Q had the 3 blade prop. You'll need to know which version you are doing to install the correct prop.

Any of the various Eduard P-39/P-400 kits contain the parts to model any P-39 built except the -C model which had 4 nose guns instead of 2.

Not to blow my own horn, but I did this table when the first Eduard P-39 came out: http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/p39variantsms_1.htm

Hope it helps!

PeeJay74-
What an awesome, consumate reply! Thank you. Sounds like you have built a few Bell Aircraft model kits. I'm planning a 1/32 scale build and trying to decide if more economical to turn a 'D' into a 'Q' than just shelling out for a Q kit. I know I can make wing pods, nose cannon changes, and probably convert something into a 6-stack. Will have to study pics about the nose fairings and vents.
Model On!

Paul,
As usual you're a virtual walking knowledge bank for WW11 aircraft.

Michael,
What a great spreadsheet. I've downloaded it and saved it in my P-39 build folder. I already have not one, but two Eduard P-39 kits that I hope to build before I'm to old to remember how to build a model, let along what a model aircraft is.
