Well time to start another project.
This will be a familiar one with just a bit of a familiar twist.
This will be for a tribute build on YouTube. The Year of the Dog.
More soon.

First up will be to show you what I have begun to collect for this build.
For most this will be enough to tell you what the twist will be.
More to come.....

You're going to rebuild the interior?
I'm quite excited to see a 1/48 B-17G come under construction here and will follow your work with great interest!

Joe, I'll be following along with great interest. Right now I am working on a "visible" B-17G. I bought all the Eduard photo etch sets for it, but I never considered redoing the ribbing.
Good luck

Bruce I also have the visible Fort. I have a bunch of am goddies for that one as well. I do have to say though that I really am enjoying making the stuff myself.

It will be yes.
As with all builds there is a starting point.
For this build it starts with the kit pieces. For me it means what do I need to do to prep this for what I am planning to do. This kit as most know, has a lot of moulded in detail. It all has to go. For my plan to work it needs to be a clean slate. I also need to remove all the positioning points for the flooring and bulkheads. For that I will need to fashion different ones that will be out of sight when I cut into the fuselage.
So out came the white glue and the flooring and bulkheads were set into place.
May take a while to get through the detail to a clean slate.

I feel your pain. That's one thing I didn't have to do with the Revell F model.
With all modesty, I'm happy with my effort, but under no illusions about its quality. The "well worn" look covers a multitude of sin! It's certainly not "Nationals" material, as some others have suggested. So I'll be very interested in seeing how you approach the same problem areas, and am really looking forward to your posts.
Here's some info I have on this 17 from the Intertoobz:
1Lt. Jerold "Newky" Newquist and the original crew of "Chow-hound", a B-17G-15-BO serial 42-31367, assigned to the 322nd BS (LG-R code), 91st BG, Bassingbourn. Photo dated 12 March 1944.
"Chow-hound" and the entire 1Lt. Jack Thompson crew of nine men were lost on the 8 August mission to a target SE of Caen, France. Five minutes prior to the target a flak shell entered the waist and exploded, breaking the aircraft in two.
"Happy Modeling!"

Many thanks for the info. It will come in handy I am sure.
I do think you cut yourself short though. In watching your build I feel you are a very skilled builder with a great eye for detail. I have not posted much but I have followed along.

Joe,
This is going to be a very interesting build for sure. Since your last two builds have been extensive cut-a-ways, and since you have cornered the market on Evergreen strips, I'm going to assume that you're doing a full cut-a-way of the B17-G.
BTW, don't forget about posting your final pictures of your 1/24 scale Bf109-G.

Joel you are right. The plan is for another cutaway build. I am hesitant though as I said in the other thread.

Joe,
It's certainly a very ambitious project. You could just do selective cut-a-ways rather then a full side, wing, etc. As Brian has said so many times, just adding enough detail to fool the viewers eye is a very effective technique.
In any event, you know that I'll be following along with great interest. Let the good times roll.

Another suggestion. Since there is a "Visible B-17" version of this, you could also use THAT fuselage half and instead of cutting away the fuselage sides simply paint the clear side masking off large areas to reveal the clear areas that you want to be visible. That might give you the best of both worlds.

Well after much thought and consideration I am moving forward.
I did cut away some. Not the entire side. I was kind of picky where I chose to cut. Still clean up to do to make them right. I also spent a couple of hours grinding and sanding to get the detail to go away.
I do have the visible Fort as well as most of the aftermarket that is available. For me though it is more of a challenge, and more fun, to do it myself.
No pics but I am moving forward.

Brian I struggle at times with what to do or how to do it. At times the struggle is whether to move forward with a plan or to scrap it and find another way.

Just a quickie of an update to show the first cuts.
Large chunks have been cut out to show different areas of the interior. What you see is after six hours of grinding, sanding, repeat.
This will turn out good, I hope.
You will also notice I have drilled and then cut out the access doors. These will be cleaned up and the edges thinned a bit.
Next up will be to clean up the cuts and move into the interior with grinding and sanding away that detail.
All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged.

Joe,
Congrats at making the start to this immense project. With all the areas on the fuselage you've cut away, just about a full interior is going to be needed. One thing for sure, is that this is going to be your longest cut-a-way build to date.
As before, I'll be along for the full ride.
