I am currently drawing up a mask set for Sailor Milan's Spitfire Mk IX, I have photos of the codes "AGM" but I cannot find out what the serial number for his aircraft was. I have tried numerous searches on the internet, but no joy.

So does anyone have a book or any other reference source that shows the serial number of this aircraft?

I'm sure you mean Sailor Malan

The use of the code AGM was clearly his initials, a Wing Commander's prerogative.

Sorry, no help on the serial.

Hello Mal,

I found this.......

Not sure how accurate this is. I've seen other photos of Sailor Malan in another Spitfire with the FY-F on it. As seen here.....

Also, see this post from 2009 at.......
http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/40773-looking-for-info-on-hugo-armstrongs-spit-mk-ix-611-raf-squadron/

Total unrelated but it's a start.

HTH.

See ya in the funnies..........

A bit of poking about here may help.

But alas you'd be lucky.

To make life really hard Wing Commanders were not normally allocated to a Squadron which makes their aircraft difficult to track.

I suspect the easiest is to track out where his log book is kept.

Yes of course Carl, I have edited my post.

Yes Brian, I know all about ZP-A but that is a MkI and the serial that I am looking for is for a MkIX I don't think that is Sailor Milan in the Cockpit of FY-F (I do have a mask set for that aircraft I need the codes for AGM for Dani Zamerbide, who is building this aircraft for a customer, and I guess for his wethering series. I have asked him what the serial is, and he is asking his customer but I haven't heard anything yet and I would like to get this done. I suspect that knowone will know; I tried a few more different searches yesterday and still nothing!

Thanks Carl, but I couldn't find anything that colates serials to actual aircraft.

Thanks all for taking the time to look around and to post, I'll let you know what the final outcome is

Hello again Mel,

The photo I first posted of Sailor Malan in FY-F, BS435 was in fact S/L Hugo "Sinker" Armstrong's aircraft. The gentleman standing on the wing is Hugo "Sinker" Armstrong.
This has been confirmed by the following links:

http://www.aircrewremembered.com/armstrong-hugo.html

http://www.w3644.com/spitfire_bs435.htm

http://secondbysecondworldwar.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Wbob5.jpg

http://web.ipmsusa3.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/review_cover_full/reviews/sky-tiger-story-sailor-malan/reviewsalormalan1.jpg

The book cover is the same photo as the others.

Here's another one:

http://www.leisuregalleries.com/malan.jpg

It would seem the photos were a bit of a propaganda/PR shots.

Also found this:
http://www.nicolastrudgian.com/collectiondetail.php?collection_id=29

Painting is called "The Biggin Hill Wing." Shows Malan in GM-A. You can zoom in, maybe you can spot the number, I couldn't when I zoomed in.

HTH.

See ya in the funnies.................

That is the photo that I have, the "A" is hidden under the door, this is when he was a Wing Commander.

K9864 is an early Spitfirte Mk I from the first batch of 212, I am after the serial for the Mk IX that he flew with the serial AGM (not AG-M).

Yep this is Sailor Milan's aircraft when he was a wing leader, but it is a Mk V so, unfurtunately not what I am looking for.

Thanks again for your time and effort

No worries Mel. Curiosity got the best of me with this one.
This might be one of those searches that raise more questions then it answers or got lost to history.

It has been mentioned that if no serial can be found then a made up one could be used! I won't do this as it could become one of those things that become the "law", especially as it seems impossible to find the correct serial; it would be the only know instance of the serial number and painted by a well respected modeller (no not me, my customer) so it could easily become the reference!

I have the serial number, I received an email from Dani, who recieved this from his customer:

"Hello Dani.

Finally! I've got the works numbers of Malan's Mark IX Spitfires in April 1943...

JK769 (his usual Spitfire)

and

JK 767 (his reserve machine)

Malan became Station Commander of Biggin HIll on the 1st January 1943, promoted to Group Captain.

Sorry to take so long. I asked everybody, and finally found the answer from the RAF Museum at Hendon (it cost me lunch for the curator!)"

Dani had agreed that applying a fake serial number would be a dangerous thing, as it could become law! So this is very good news
