Hello friends! I'm looking for information on Luftwaffe fighter units in southern Germany and Austria in the fall of 1944-1945. I'm basically wondering who the 332nd FG Tuskegee Airmen flying out of Italy would have faced on their escort missions. Also, what types the Germans flew.

Any information would be very much appreciated!

Hi Michael,

after they leave the mediterranean parts most of the JG's went to the Vienna area and some stay and operate from there. Others went on to Normandy, Operation Baseplate or eastern front, and service in multiple Reichsdefense-actions.Probably the "black birdmen" face mainly the rest of

III./Jagdgeschwader 53
Stab/./Jagdgeschwader 77
I./Jagdgeschwader 77
II./Jagdgeschwader 77
III./Jagdgeschwader 77
Stab./Jagdgeschwader 53
I./Jagdgeschwader 53
I./Jagdgeschwader 53
III./JG 52

and maybe:
I./Jagdgeschwader 4 ("Sturmstaffel 1"
(Focke Wulf A9 and D9,FW 190A-8/R2, 109 G6/G10/G14/K4)

After that the Unit was shifted till early summer of 1944 to Italy near Ferrara in order to defend German bases around around the area of Rome and northern Italy."
I./Jagdgeschwader 5
III./Jagdgeschwader 77
10./Jagdgeschwader 301
( January 1944 JG 301's establishment was Stab./JG 301 (2 Bf 109G-6), I./JG 301 (26 Bf 109G-6), II./JG 301 (3 Bf 109G-6), and III./JG 301 (30 Bf 109G-6/
November 1944 was thus; Stab JG 301; (4 Fw 190 A-9) I./ JG 301; (5 Fw 190 A-8, 18 Fw 190 A-9) II./ JG 301; (10 Fw 190 A-8/R6, 11 Fw 190 A-8/R11, 15 Fw 190 A-9/R 11) III./ JG 301; (50 Fw 190 A-8.)

other JG's had mainly

And after actually LOOKING at my own references (specifically Osprey's Sturmgruppen book) I find that IV.(Sturm)/JG3 fought the 15th AF over southern Germany, Austria, and Hungary in the summer of 1944. Exactly what I was looking for. Sigh. Pays to look, I guess. But thanks for the info everyone!
