Steffen Arndt brings us photos of his fine build of Trumpeter's MiG-15. Suffice to say, Steffen was less than impressed by the kit, but he cheered it up with plenty of aftermarket corrections and detail sets to excellent effect.

Despite the kit being bad, you've done a brilliant job making it interesting and appealing to the eye. Great job!

Yes you did a super job on this difficult kit. I´ve done a 1:48 Mig-17 recently and I know what you mean. I want to do a 1:48 Mig-15 since ages but I will surely wait for a good quality Eduard kit which I hope will show up one day

Cheers guys,
I am just in from our annual show in Berlin-Gatow. Great but exhausting weekend.
Many thanks to Rowan for publishing the pix and not editing my email comments I sent him In need to mention this is one of Trumpeters first 48 scale kits and it is really bad (as a model kit) it is more accurate that the Tamiya though.
Gary, Thomas: many thanks for your kind comment!
I hope Jean-Luc (Formery that is, for those who are not that long on Aeroscale) will have a look here and can add some comments on the Pitt pens. This was my first try on a life model and though the result has a bit too much contrast it worked out fine and I like the result.
all the best

I AM happy with the result, but the way was a hard one.

Nice result despite the bad kit, Steffen. The different shades of natural metal really adds dimension and interest.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks Jesper!
Yes thats true, but I do not like to mask single panels so using the Pitt pencils really is an option for me.

Nice looking build Steffen. "Silk purse out of a Sow's ear!" As the saying goes.
I think I need to check out those Pitt artists products now, I really like that panel variation technique for small areas.
Cheers, D

Thank you Damian!
These pens are pretty nice and if you have the patience to gradually build up the effects they are a real winner. As I wrote, Jean-Luc has showed me this on a show and he is really good at it. I lack this patience and thus the effect is less subtle....

Steffen,
Now that's one impressive build in its own right, without even considering what a dog of a kit Trumpeter offered.
I guess my memory is starting to slip even more, as I can't recall Jean-Luc writing about those Pitt artists pens. They do sound like something I'd be very interested in.

Cheers Joel! Many thanks for your kind comment!
Jean-Luc mentioned it one or two times when he posted pix of his models in the past years (which was very rare as he is much less active now) I hoped I could persuade him to share a few thoughts here ... seems it did not work.

Steffen, I can only add to what has already been said, great work on a pig of a kit.
Regarding the Pitt pens I had to look them up only to discover I have some already but didn't realise what they were called and use them for panel lining. Now seeing them used on metal to get the different shades I'll give that a go when I next do a natural metal / silver aircraft.

Thanks Luciano!
Well, just to show what J-L does with this stuff. All shading and flow effects are done with the Pitt pencils over RLM 65 base coat (this is Jean-Luc picture):
My idea was to get some variation with the grey pencils (fast) .. he works much longer and more refined on these effects!
BTW what is your team? Scotland, Italy, England, ...? I remember my first Telford visit in 2003 when England won... lots of cheers at the IPMS Dinner
all the best

Those effects are very good, I'll have to give the Pitt pens a better try other than just for panel lines.
Italy of course! Although we are out now but that's what's expected of the Italian rugby team any way, they're slowly improving.

Steffen thank you, I will speak to Jean-Luc.
Will you have the Mig with you at Telford? Looking forward to meeting you again in a couple of weeks.
