This aircraft represents a P40 B Tomahawk of the AVG Flying Tigers flown by
Peter Wright (Flight Leader) 2nd Pursuit Squadron, late 1941.
This is the Hobbycraft kit in 1:48 scale of the British mark II but built as an AVG aircraft.
Although not the most accurate kit of the P40 B, it was a joy to build.
Additions to the basic kit were:
Ultra cast resin wheels
CMK gunsight and post
EZ line aerials
Brake lines using vinyl tubing
Drilled out wing gun barrels
Fuselage formation light frames made with 1:350 scale ship porthole
Scratchbuilt pitot tube as the kit one was grossly out of scale
Drilled out portside panel for fuel and oil filler caps
Drilled out exhaust stacks
Eaglecal decals
Model was painted with Tamiya acrylics and weathered slighty with pastel powders.
Panel lines were penciled in with 2B pencil.
Final coat Vallejo satin finish.
Thanks for looking.....comments welcome.
Cheers,
Joe

Thanks Pedro,
Yes it could use some wear and tear. I am now moving on to a P40 E and on
that one I will attempt some chipping, wear and tear and heavier weathering.
Cheers,
Joe

That's well done! I like how you did the antenna wires. I have ordered a spool of EZ Line and I am going to try it on my Ki-44.

Joe,
Excellent AVG "Shark"! If I was told I could only model one subject forevermore, it would be AVG P-40s.
Even though I usually really beat up my finishes, I appreciate a factory-fresh airframe. I think that it is completely authentic to model many subjects with the bare minimum of wear and tear (sometimes only with exhaust stains) as attrition claimed the unit before overuse could.
As time becomes a premium, that is becoming more and more important to me.
I look forward to your P-40E.

I heard about this trick but never used it. It seems like this is giving quite good results

Thank you guys for looking and the comments.
@ Bill...EZ line was good to work with, it is a flat elastic thread but once stretched, sort of takes on a rounded shape.
I have some Uschi thread on order and am anxious to try this
thread and compare to EZ line.
@ Fredrick...Have yet to try heavier weathering on an aircraft. The P40 E I have started will display some
heavier weathering.
@ Drabslab... I have never tried the deep dark lines as
using paint,I find them too dark but the pencil is subtle and can be erased as you work, if necessary.
Thanks again guys.
Cheers,
Joe

Joe,
Just an excellent build of a P-40B in my favorite markings. I guess growing up watching John Wayne films, especially the Flying Tigers had a really big influence on me.
Your build, paint camo scheme, and decaling are flawless. Well done.
While you chose not to do much weathering, every single operational aircraft at one point in it's life span was new, and showed little to no wear and tear. As for your recessed panel lines, I too like how you dealt with them using a #2B pencil. Will have to try that one of these days.
Recessed panel lines are the result of sunlight moving across the surface, and the shadow effect in the recess panels joints results in those dark lines.

Hi Joel,
Thanks for the comments.
I have yet to watch the whole movie...started to watch segments on Youtube.
Ahh...those B&W movies...they were great. Any idea what aircraft
were used? cause the P40's look somewhat weird, in the movie.
Cheers,
Joe

Joe,
Those "B" old Republic movies used models for almost everything. Just look at those cockpits, even we could make a better ones, but back then they sold war bonds, and were great moral builders.
Growing up I actually thought that John Wayne won the war in the Pacific almost single handed. And Ike was more then a national hero. Hence, an easy Victory as president.
