The article claims that it original Japanese color film. However, I suspect that it is colorized b/w - look at the tone of the foreground Buf's canopy.
Regardless, interesting effect of the paint wearing off - looks like deteriorating paint that was brushed on.

I've also heard many folks say it's colorized. BTW, I think that's a Hurricane in the background.
