While I was perusing a list of the aircraft Eric "Winkle" Brown had flown I came across this rather ugly looking thing, the Short Sturgeon SB.3 ASW
Wondering if anyone has a favourite "ugly"?

Many, actually.
Shorts have built a number of wonderfully ugly aircraft, that Sturgeon is new to me, very nice find.
The Amiot 143M is near the top of my list -

Wow, the Amiot looks similar to one of my favourites the LWS 6 Zubr.
Is there any family relation?

The Fleet Fort. The only aircraft designed and built by Canadians during the second world war.
There are two of them at the museum I volunteer at - one of them is airworthy and gets flown regularly.
I have a soft spot for it.

Shorts Skyvan.
Always looked like it was made from spare parts to me. The fuselage is too short and too fat, the wings look too narrow in chord to lift it into the air and the engines are clearly from an RC model! Clearly no attempt was made at aerodynamics.
It was however, a wonderfully useful little aeroplane that worked hard the world over. The Omani Airforce even used them as makeshift bombers during the war in the Dhofar.

Wasn't an Airtruk featured in Mad Max 3?
And I have never seen the Belphegor before. It's so weird I want one!

Indeed it was. Many people thought they had dreamed it up in the special effects department.

Well if there was ever an aeroplane that looks like it has been cobbled together in the post-apocolyptic Australian outback, the Airtruk is it!
The undercarriage frightens me! Not much space between the nose and main gear.

I can see why. It looks like one of those Egg planes Hasegawa released scaled up into a real aeroplane

But amazingly the Caproni Ca.60 “Noviplano” did
“a nine-wing flying boat intended to be a prototype for a 100-passenger trans-atlantic airliner. It featured eight engines and three sets of triple wings..
The prototype only made one short flight on 4 March 1921 over Lake Maggiore in Italy. The aircraft attained an altitude of only 18 m (60 ft) and crashed shortly thereafter, breaking up on impact. The pilot escaped unscathed…”

The Savoia-Marchetti_S.55 was a quite successful design

Apart from the engines the S.55 is quite pretty. Not like

Or the all-time ugliest, the Vedovilli of 1911
Posted: Thursday, February 25, 2016 - 07:34 AM UTC
I will have to go into hiding for this but, honestly, look at this lumpy, non-symmetrical, bulb-nosed, anteater-nosed, gangling winged, sway backed, dog's-hind-leg-shaped rear fuselage, neither rounded nor squared example of Teutonic malevolent design, the FW 190 Dora. It is to airframes what a llama is compared to a horse.
Ugly, but just too cool!
