I got the Airfix Avro 504, is their a source to find out the colour and markings used by the RNAS when they attacked the Zeppelin base?

Airfix kit is for model 504K. The RNAS machines in 1914 were earlier type of 504. At least the nose was different. Here' one profile I found on the net, but I don't know about its accuracy. I seriously doubt that there were any roundels on the wings yet

It appears (If that description is correct) that the aircraft did have cockades, at least on the lower wing. It also appears the forward crew station was covered over, my guess would be for a fuel tank. Wonder why Airfix didn't do this version of the Avro? Any way, thanks for the colour profile, I couldn't find a thing til I brought up the IWM photos searching through their WW1 data base.
I have the Scale Model article on setting the 504 right, I guess I have to add new engine and cowling, besides bomb racks.

Anyone know what issue of Airfix magazine had the conversion from 504K back to a RNAS type?

Interesting picture. There seems to be large rectangle painted over under the wings. On it there is a single dark ring. Maybe there has been an early Union Jack marking which has bee painted over and replaced with an early red circle marking used by RNAS from October 1914 on?

Great link, I had noticed what appears to be white squares, with a cockade painted over them. Funny, since the French Govt. seemed from the write up, so worry the Germans would think the French conducted the raid.

I got WS Datafile 48 and an AIRFIX mag FEB 69, so I guess the fuselage needs some work and then you need to make a new cowl for it. Are their any AM kits for the Avro?

The 504K had a universal motor mount for any rotary engine, thus the fatter fuselage. The cowel assembly on the 504 was close to the look of the Fok. E-1 cowel. Trivia I know but I have sat looking at an old Smer kit of the K Trying to figure a way to convert that K.

I just pulled is from the stash to look at it.

Maybe just a paint job and for a "movie" version...

I was examining the two close up Photos of the 504's. fantastically clear from the copies I have. I noticed the Avro 179 with the painted out flag (which was one of the original three 504's) has the Red Ring marking, BUT Avro 874 if you look closely has what appears to be the French markings with the blue center.

Could it be that the three new Avro 504's were since they were shipped straight from the factory painted at Belfort with the full French insignia?

Oh for a color drawing or sketch, of the scene.

Going to Mikko's link, it would appear that French markings would be normal for a RNAS aircraft. I still don't understand the French being worried unless they feared the aircraft would be operated over Switzerland, and they didn't want the grief.
Surprise no After Market kits have been done for this. If only they could of flown DR1s

As it was the Swiss did complain ... To the British. You see the border is down the center of the lake. And the line is hard to see from 500 Meters at 80 mph. And the Germans told the Swiss they were damned Englanders.

The Hale bomb was a 5" artillery shell with fins riveted on.
