For some items that are difficult to find here in the USA ( i.e. FineMolds) I use HobbyLink Japan- economy shipping takes up to 30 days so plan ahead- they will also store your purchases in a " private warehouse" for up to 60 days so you can combine shipping to save a little.

As already mentioned my two favorite online retailers are ScaleHobbyist.com and Sprue Brothers. 90% of my purchases are generated from them.

I use to be a Squadron customer, but their in-stock condition which is still horrendous including when they run sales, makes buying anything a 50/50 deal at best. And they seem to have the highest shipping rates by far.

I do buy a lot of AM directly from smaller dealers, but that's becoming an accepted method of our hobby these days.

Rarely do I buy anything via ebay, but there are times that's the only resource. I never enter auctions as I found that they end up at the last min as a bidding war, but rather the buy now option. The one exception is that many of smaller specialty companies don't have a web site, but use both facebook and ebay for selling their goods.

I am on Amazon Prime and it is absolutely the 1st place I go to look for anything and everything. When My LHS closed last year I started looking for stuff there, usually kits, and sometimes get a good price and free Prime shipping. It doesn't work put all the time but lots of times I end up ordering through them. Not the selection a hobby shop has but if I am looking for something specific I try. Then Sprue Bros. is usually my 1st "shop" stop.

As has already been noted, HLJ are great for Japanese stuff. I also always look at Modelimex for Eastern European items.

With aftermarket stuff I do try to buy direct from manufacturers where possible. It cuts out the "middle man" and is often cheaper (some of the mark-ups in the UK are high)- and, having produced resin sets myself in the past, I know just what a difference it makes to any small producer to get retail (as against wholesale) orders.

What are some links to direct manufacturers of aftermarket parts?

I use a very small shop in Truro, T7 Models. Martin gives me a 5% discount and if I pick stuff up then there's no postage costs. The bonus is I gain browney points for taking the wife on a hopping trip I do buy specialist stuff direct from source and I have an "Administration" account with Uschi van der Rosten, which means that I don't pay for anything other than postage (I don't use it though but Alex reimburses me then reminds me of my account status!)

A classic examples is Fly Models (although they are a limited run kit manufacturer, rather than purely aftermarket), where it is massively cheaper to buy direct than go through UK dealers.

But there are probably thousands of aftermarket companies out there - some of them tiny "one man" operations. Many don't have web pages, so it can be a case of chasing down Facebook profiles or just e-mail addresses and asking "How can I buy your stuff?". In my experience, they are usually delighted to supply direct. It means more money for them and can be much cheaper price for you than buying through an importer, so it's worth the time spent doing a little web searching to track them down.

Being a bit of a sleuth is part of the fun - and you could well turn up stuff that most modellers around the world have never heard of. If you do... write us a review!
