So after an extended break I've got the bug again.....

Starting with a hasegawa 1/48 typhoon bubble top.

Got the kit and supplies so made a tentitive start a few days ago.

So far wings glued and fuselage "plugs" glued and cockpit started.

Already 3 problems

Port wing inboard of the cannon there's an overlap on the bottom of the wing. 1 of the plugs didn't end up sitting very true (my fault) and don't know if it's related but the wing assembly does not want to fit into the (elastic banded together) fuselage.

No pics yet but regardless......why did I ever stop doing this??

Ian,
Welcome back to the dark side.

Please post a few pictures so that we can see exactly what the issues are, and hopefully have a few solutions for you.

One thing you should do is dry fit everything before gluing to find any issues. Most of the time they're much easier to fix before you glue things together, or at least gives you the opportunity to formulate a game plan.

Thanks for the welcome people

Sad thing is I did dry fit several times the the cockpit plus is totally down to me. I'm going to try and get time to take some pics tonight....

I must say though, regardless of how this turns out I am throughly enjoying it.

Don't think the wife is so much - she's painted with acrylics before so I've shown her about 20 pictures of cockpit and wheel well interiors and asked her to mix up the colours for me

Welcome back Ian, I'm not long returned to the fold too and having a great time with Aeroscale.
I wish such forums and all the photo-etch, resin goodies and state of the art kits were around 20+ years ago... I might not have drifted away into other stuff.

Great kit - the cockpit surround is the trickiest part of the build.

So a few pics (hopefully!) of my screw ups so far....

So can you spot my deliberate mistake? not sure how BOTH wings ended up mis-aligned but it explains why they will not fit into the fuselage. I guess I can sand a sliver off each wing towards the leading edge and it should be ok.

Onto the plugs...

the port side isn't too bad but starboard (photo doesn't really show the extent of the problem) is horrible. Never have used filler before I am tempted to leave it as is. Scared I make it 10 times worse.....

I came across this excellent blog of the same kit: http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.php?t=6592 and the FIRST step is the plugs and a warning about getting it wrong...

Looks like I can't get away from doing some filling....

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Hi Ian

great to see some pics up!

Hmm.. suggestions: well number 1, always remember we do this for fun; I always find that I have to sand and fill to varying degrees on most kits-its a rare kit where I don't; last but not least, don't be too hard on yourself-remember this is your fist kit in however many years, so treat it as a practice run for the next one which you can take all the learnings from this and apply them to the next.

Thanks Russell

I've put aside the wing/fselage "issues" for a bit and had a good hour cleaning and building rockets and launch rails. Even playing around making some sort of detail on the seat. Not wanting to spend money (spent enough already!) I've been playing with blu-tac and a paper seatbelt.

Primer tomorrow!

I doubt there's a gap as big as this on a full size typhoon!!!

Ian,
I'm not familiar with kit. But many times when there is a full length gap like that, the wing Dihedral needs to be adjusted that will close the gap some what.

For any remaining large gaps try wedging shims of sheet plastic to close the gap, then glue and let dry. Cut and rough sand to shape. Then the usual putty of your choice.

Cheers Joel. Having looked at the way the wings have ended up is my fault. I put elastic bands too tight round the wrong points too quickly after I applied glue. I did have an attempt at seperating them but no joy. The photo is only of the fuselage taped but at least with a bit of sanding them actually fit now. Fair way to go before fuselage is glued so have a while to think about it.....

Joel's suggestion is the way to go here Ian. Don't be shy of adding some styrene in to fill the larger gaps.

All part of the learning curve for next time

I've built this kit and the gaps at the wing roots and in front of the canopy are typical, as already suggested styrene and putty are the order of the day.
Keep at it.

Ian,
Those wing gaps are too large especially on the Port side. So I went to the blog you put up the link for, and his wings were a pretty snug fit. He did mention that he had to adjust the Dihedral some.

Judging by the gaps you're dealing with, I would really need to see a few pictures head on, and the bottom as well. Right now it could be both the Dihedral and the that fuselage needs to be spread some on the bottom side. Both are easily done before you glue the wings on.

Thanks Joel. Wing fit is my fault. Both have pulled out from the correct position when I first glued them. I did have a quick push to see if they would fit flush with superglue but I think I need to fill. I'll take it slow but the gap may be too small for sprue (never done it before).

Ian,
Since you've already glued the wing assembly in place, then fill the gaps with pieces of sheet plastic and Extra Thin. Let dry for a min of 2 days. cut and sand the excess off. Then fill in the gaps with your choice of putty. Better off doing it in steps then all at once.

thankfully looking a bit better now.....

Joel you were right - the entire wing needed set with superglue and taped till it set. I looked from the front beforehand and they were not sitting right.....

Next stop the (primer) spray shop (cardboard box with 1 end cut out )
