Hi there
We all know how hard it is for Big Mal to cope without fresh pics of Spitfire models! :-)
So, just for him, this is the Spitfire FR. IX which I'm building for RMG. I'm doing things a bit back to front; because of the pale final finish, I've pre-shaded before a doing a thin coat of white... pale final finish?... the top-coat will be PINK!!
The RAF used a pale pink for low level PRU camouflage. This plus weathered invasion stripes should make for a Spit with a difference.
All the best

That will be a nice scheme, don't see many pinks.

Hi Peter
Yes, the FR IXs were usually fully armed (some had their cannons removed) , but you're quite right to raise the question; most PR versions were not armed, and also had a curved, unarmoured windscreen.
Here's a photo of 16 Sqn Spitfire FR IXs.

O......... my.......... god, more Spitfires. Drool :-)
Looking good Rowan. I'm not sure I get the reason for pre-shading back to front? If you use Halfords White plastic primer, like I keep telling you, then pre-shade with black, it will work loverly, under your pink and white, believe me :-) Let go your mind, Merlin, trust the force :-)
Thanks for the Spits, much appreciated :-)

Hi Mal,
I actually was going to use white Halfords this time, but I couldn't resist experimenting!
I'll post more pics as I make progress.

great news rowan !
I find pink pitfires to be the most beautiful planes in the world !
I've got a pink PRX in 1/72nd scale waiting for me to have the time some day.
By chance, do you know if the PR X was used during D-Day ? With or without invasion stripes ? You certainly guess why i'm asking that question...

I'll be interested to see how this one comes out Rowan. I sort of understand the reasoning behind the back to front preshading. One thing, is it me or are the holes for the outer gunports in the wing leading edges set a bit high?

Hi Martin,
When I started the kit I wondered that too, so I checked some refs and they seemed about right. Seeing as you had the same doubt, I've had another look and come to a slightly different conclusion... if anything, Hasegawa have set the inboard machine guns a litte low!
I found a period shot with the gun ports open:
The inner ports seem to be just above the wing centre line (not as much as the outer guns), but Hasegawa have moulded them centred on the leading edge.
Cheers for making me take another look. :-)
