Hi to all the guys in the amorama discussion group!
I want to ask about the different models of the Mig-29. Which would be the most accurate in any scale (ie, 1/144 up to 1/32)? For each scale, what would be the pros? cons? Hope somebody responds to this I plan to buy and build one in the near future
TIA

Tamiya makes one in 1/72. I think it's a rebox. Nice model, little flashes, interior well detailed, not sure if it's accurate though.
Academy has both 29A and 29B in 1/48. Haven't done this one.
Hope this helps!

HI there,
these are the kits that I know of:
1/144 : Academy makes them. Teeny weeny stuff, and the nose pod doesn't look OK.
1/72 : Italeri makes these, and these are supposed to be the best at 1/72. Only problem is with the nose wheel area. Otherwise it's the most accurate one at 1/72.
1/48 : Again, Academy makes these, and they are pretty good. Only the ejection seat is absolutely off the mark, but nothing an Aires or Neomega resin set can't fix. There was also a feature article here by Vodnik on how he built his Academy Mig. Check it out...
1/32 : No idea. I think Revell makes one, but I don't have much details on those..
HTH...

What are the problems with the Italeri nosewheel area? Are they easy to fix?

Hi Jeepney,
Sorry to take such a long time to reply...
Here are the flaws in the kit, which I picked up after trawling the net for info on this kit. I picked it up from a variety of sites, so don't ask me those!!!
1. The Italeri has got incorrect burner and some inaccurate fitting near the nose. Other than that, its pretty OK. The nose fitting is a lot of work. But the burner thing seemed fairly easy to correct. The problem was that the engine "tube" pieces that go between the back of the fuselage and the actual "turkey feather" cans is about 1/16" too long, which makes the feathers themselves stick too far. If you just saw that much off those tube pieces, though, everything seems to line up quite nicely.
2. Italeri's are off in the forward section and landing gear. Its major flaw is in the size of the wheels - both main and nosewheel. Replace them with the same items from the Airfix kit and you have the most accurate MiG-29 in 1:72 scale.
3. According to drawings in 4+ book, the overall shape is good, but cockpit, wheels and missile pylons aren't so good. While for the cockpit and wheels you can use aftermarket items (such as Neomega and Equipage), the pylons must be scratchbuilt.
4. The panel lines have a "soft" edge and sometimes (mainly on the wings) are in the wrong place.
HTH!!!
Cheers, BP.
