for the sake of nostalgia I am building some old Hawk air racers starting with the Curtis R3 racer that Jimmy Dolittle flew to victory.

here it is.

R3 is done starting the water with some five minute epoxy.

the epoxy gives it depth and I will add the waves and texture with Vallejo water effects

Hi Doug

Lovely work as ever!

We really must get you to do a figure-painting tutorial for us, because what you do puts most of our efforts to shame!

I've long promised myself that I should make a proper effort to master at least the basics of figure painting; if I could produce something even half that good, I'd be well chuffed.

All the best

Doug,

Nice work. I look forward to these.

Jim - superb figure! Where'd you get it? It reminds me of the Valiant Miniatures, et. al., of the 1970s+.

thanks, it is a mix of parts from the spares box, the body is from a metal figure of a pilot with a Monogram pilot head.

Another exceptional work. I'm no longer astonished by your work Doug, but I'm very perplexed as to how you find the time-- by my count, you have done four incredible vignettes in just three months-- Walking on Water; The last Shot; The Cowboy; and now Jimmy and his racer. I'm still waiting for the Cohen Art Gallery exhibition. I think you should write a book, or at least, write a feature showing a collection of your work-- you are right up there with Shep Paine.

Shep was a very good friend of mine and he taught me lots of stuff, I miss him. I do have a book coming out soon and I will let you know when it is available.

That's something I'd like to see very much-- please let us know when and where it will be available. I'm glad tha Shep left a legacy with you, and his technique is not lost to the ages.

Hi Doug

Sorry - I missed that thread. To be honest, though, work of your quality needs to be on the Frontpage and then pinned so that we can be sure to benefit from it. There are obviously great figure painters on the Network (just look at some of the content on Historicus Forma), but I don't think I'd be treading on too many toes to say that a lot of us really need help on Aeroscale - I've never even shown any of my efforts, because I'm not happy with them and they'd deservedly be torn to bits! LOL!

As we discussed before, if I can source some sample aviation figures (not so easy now that I've stepped down from Manager-Editing and shed so many of my contacts, but you never know...), we must get you to do the works on them in a step-by-step How-To.

All the best

Howdy,

Love these planes! Your build is inspiring me to maybe build my the kit in my stash.

Here's my build of the Laird Solution. I added a rudimentary cockpit. I also detailed the cowling and replaced the engine.

Hi Brian

Lovely job! It's great to see these Golden Age racers step into the limelight!

I hauled my Stash to a safer location a few weeks ago (the cellar is damp! ) and I'm sure I spotted a Gee Bee in the process. Jeez! There are just so many kits I want to build!

All the best

I found some cool pictures of the Supermarine with the Royal Navy crew tending the plane and giving the pilot a piggy back ride to shore.

Yes, it's exactly 1/48. "1/4" to the foot scale" is what 1/48 was called in the US during the 1950s and early 60s. You can still see it printed on the old boxes. Scale Modeller magazine used to talk about "quarter inch scale" and "quarter scale" all the time, way back in the bad old days

And a certain Rowan is known to drop that phrase hereabouts even today

Hi there

Yep - that's where I learned it. LOL! We never talked about quarterscale or quarter scale here in the UK until we started getting US magazine imports like FSM. It's like vacform or vacuform - I've no idea what's accepted as "correct" - vacuform rolls off the pen and tongue easiest for me, so that's what I go with.

Lovely build Doug! The only point that concerns me is the colour. I know there's a bit of debate over how pale and bright the blue used on Supermarine's racers was. The yellow cast on your final pic makes it hard to judge the colour, but the consensus online seems to be that the original brighter colour was overpainted to spruce up the airframe for exhibition after WW2. There certainly are shots showing a bright blue showing through where the later paint has worn away.

All the best

THese were some neat and intersting kits that HAWK model company did and Testors re-issued. Nice work all around.
