I have been looking at photos of F-86 Sabres, and I've noticed that the gunport area doesn't appear to be the same color (shiny aluminum) as the rest of the aircraft. In some photos it looks gray, in others sort of a flat steel color. What was the actual color of this area?
Thanks,
Jim

You described it best when you said 'flat steel' because that's exactly what it was. The gun blast tubes and their surrounding panel is a high-stress area so it needed to be made of steel rather than aluminium.

Thanks, Jessie. Somehow I knew you'd know.
