Tossed this out on P-47 Heaven, our special interest group dedicated to the P-47.

Seems that when there are no posts within a year, the administrator can remove the site from the main menu. Which has happened in this case.

That said, I propose a group build to save our SIG!

Any P-47, any scale, in any form of completion. Let's get this back on the menu!

So far, there's Pasi (PasiAhopelto), Torsten (Blackwidow), Bob (Bigrip74) and myself (john41492) on board.

QUESTION: for those with better knowledge!

I would like to know the differences between the following kits. Mainly how well does the parts fit together. And how well does after market stuff (cockpit, wheel wells) fit without a lot of shaving or cutting?

My two cents? Stop after the first four.

The Hasegawa kits are pretty nice and have more variety. But the Tamiya kits are some of the first models that earned Tamiya their modern reputation. They are superbly engineered and go together like a breeze.

I purchased a 1/48 Hasegawa P-47D Bubbletop for $25.59 free shipping.

I am partial to the Razorback more than the NMF D, M, or N models.

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the late reply, but I know a bit about the P-47 kits out there. Though you've already purchased the Hasegawa kit, you need to know that the fit on the underside is not so good. You'll need to decide to putty the back or the front end. Either way, you're gonna lose some of the beautiful detail and have to replace.

And when I say putty, I mean a lot! I put about 2 grams onto my "-5" done in Don Gentile's bird (see it on builds on P-47 Heaven). I did 5 putty sessions, and re-scribed all the lost details, it turned out quite nice, but a lot of work. It's a good accurate rendition, though requires a bit of work.

In the future if you've extra cash, you get a Tamiya for 30 USD delivered, and you won't have any fit issues at all!

Otherwise, I could suggest Otaki's kit. This is often overlooked, but a very nice kit. The cockpit needs work, and the landing gear is less than banner. The kit on the whole for the cost is a good value.

The Monogram/Revell kits are the same. Molds were made in 1964 and it's a great kit! For today, if you're not gonna put a pilot in it, you'll need a cockpit, many are available (I really like the True Details one!). The engine can be built up, or one can get the TD R-2800 (a kit unto itself). Many say the tail is bit narrow, but as long as someone at a model show doesn't put their Tamiya one next to yours's you'll never notice. This is my go to kit for introducing new modelers to the world of WWII models. The fit is good, and if you know how to assemble the wings, you get no gap at all. The wheel wells are poor, but who looks there? Ha ha ha. It remains a good kit.

The Academy kit is just a Monogram kit with engraved panel lines, the fit is so-so, but does build into a nice representation.

So, that's my 10 cents worth, I hope you'll want to join this campaign, because the loss of the special interest group would be a loss to us all.

I see I'm still listed as a host for the P-47 SIG, but my admin powers have gone. Unfortunately due to work and family commitments both Nigel and myself had to step back from the SIG duties and it faded from sight on the home page of Kitmaker, which is a real shame because there is a huge amount of information and reference material stored in those threads.

I am still working (slowly) on my 1/24 VFS P-47, but I have a few 1/48 scale kits in the stash so depending on the timing I would love to join in and try to revive interest here.

Giving this a bump, I think one builder is still needed...

Reason for the bump is radial engined campaign that starts in few weeks, and I'll need to decide if I'll build P-47 (only one in stash) there or here

Pasi, Have you checked the thread on P-47 Heaven? I think I added my 2 cents, and mused about doing the MPM XP-47H. Hope I'm in your count.

Actually I took John's (campaign organizer) calculations above, I believe it's the accurate number.
