So, I finaly have pics to show...
I'm still far from finished but working at my own little pace...

This is what I did :

1) paint the whole model aluminium with ALCLAD paint
2) cover some areas with MASKOL
3) paint the top surface IJA green
4) prepare a lighter shade of green and spray it on the top most surfaces

pictures at that stage :

5) a few days later, rubbing the model with my fingers, I peel off the maskol
pictures :

here, I'm pulling on the maskol :

the result :

The green is Tamiya paint : acrylic.

Now I soak the green parts with spirit, and with a fine brush I place small dots of light green and dark green
oil paint (artist oils). With another brush, I pull these backwards, following the airflow.
That way, I have streaks and different shades of green... I want the green to realy look worn out !

result :

Then came the masking for the black parts :

I know I went too far with the aluminium, but now it's done... I'll try to tone down the big surfaces a bit... and I'll add plenty of small scratches !

So, what do you think ?

I don't know whether it is overdone or not but that method certainly does look effective. How will you show the paint wear on the decals?

Penpen that is really looking good
I really like your technic and the overall look of the plane when you are done looks great.
I never thought about using a paint on mask to get the chipped/worn effect. I had always read about chipping with toothpicks, or peeling off with tape, and of course the salt method.
On one of my next kits I am going to have to break down and do the metal coat first and then paint on top of that. The two slightly different shades of the green looks excellent too.

Don't rush yourself ....but definately can't wait to see more progress.

I'm truly impressed. I would never have thought of using Maskol myself. Seems to be a far easier way than using salt and tapes. IOW I take your technique/approach into serious consideration when I finally do my Kawanishi Shiden

Cheers

thank you for your kind words !
When the black and yellow are done, I'll future the aircraft.
Over that, I'll apply the decals. When they are dry, I'll probably hurt them a bit with a blade and change their color with oil paints !
I'll be on holidays next week (no internet connection at hom) so I should be able to whow you finished pics when I'm back !

Penpen -
I was wondering ... at the point you are at now, you are going to paint the black along with some yellow. You have all ready peeled off your masking to show the chipping. Since you want the same look on the black and the yellow areas, are you going to use more maskol? I was wondering if leaving the mask on until after you painted the black and yellow might have worked. Or do you have other plans?
Just watching and learning
