Looks like a huge leap forward from my 1980 D&S number 4.

I bet it is!
Comparing the recent books to the ones I bought in the 80s and 90s, much better products today. And with enhanced Modelers Section - juast think of the new kits since 1980; I built the 1/48 ESCI Hun when it came out but if I ever built another F-100, it was the Lindberg "Battle Damage" model. I have Monogram's ready to go someday and it is cool to read it is still the best 1/48 model available.
Yes, this ain't the 1980s release!

There are 6 kits reviewed, Aurora 1/98 YF-100, Revel 1/68.5 F-100A/C, Hasegawa 1/72 F-100D, Lindberg 1/48 YF-100, ESCI F-100D and Monogram 1/48 F-100D. In addition there's a 2 page article on accurizing Revell's F-100A/C.

Six!? At least three of them were/are real models.
1980, just think of the state of modeling, then. Let's say a F-4E: 1/32 Revell; 1/48 Fujimi; 1/72 Hasegawa, Airfix...who else? 1/1oo Tamiya. I wonder how many F-4Es there are now?

I remember back around them, the mail order houses would 1/2 page lists of the kits they were trying to sell, and it seemed like 2/3rds of them were Phantoms of one scale or another.
