After reading the thread on hand painting instrument panels I started thinking about another method of doing them. It is still experimental but here's the method I came up with.
1. Take the kit instrument panel and rub it on some wet and dry to thin it.
2. Drill out the instrument faces.
3. Paint the panel black and dry brush with grey to age it.
4. On the back glue a piece of clear plastic cut from a "blister pack" type packaging.
5. Paint the detail of the dials in white onto the back of the clear piece so they appear where the holes are when viewed from the front.
6. Paint black over the white to cover were the holes in the panel are.
I think I may be onto something, from the front the dials don't look bad and appear to have glass covers thanks to the shiny clear plastic. Here's a pic of my first attempt. I think if the whole set of dials were done the same way and various knobs and switches painted it could look quite decent.
Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Hi Martin
That looks really neat!
Drilling out the dials certainly adds some realistic depth to instruments. I did a similar thing on a Mustang... but I cheated and used decals for the faces!
Methinks you have something there...
All the best
