Depends upon what type of activity you wish to model. The F4U-4 was first flown on 20 Sept. 1944 and accepted by the Navy that October. It was first used in combat by the Marines in April 1945.
The F4U-1D's were accepted by the Navy in April 1944 and immedialtely went into combat. I hope this information helps you to decide which way to go.

By the time these birds were in squadron, Guadalcanal was a quiet rear area. COMAIRSOL USMC units were mainly flying out of Koratina (spelling?) on Bougainville.
