I am in the process of building an Academy 1/48 scale P-38 droop snoot. I am modeling a field converted P-38, and I have a few questions about the cockpit.
I am assuming that because the Droop Snoot did not carry any guns, I can remove the gun sight from the model. Since there are very few reference photos of droop snoots avalible, this is an asssumtion on my part.
I purchased the P-38 walk around book by squadron, and this has lead me to a new question about the use of Instrument pannel 'shrouds'. From the photos (page 10 if you have the book) it appears that the a cloth 'shroud' extended from the top of the instrument pannel, to the armored glass frame that is even with the back of the front canopy. I am assuming this was done to increase the visablity of the instrument pannel while night flying?
On the photos of the P-38J cockpit, (page 17 of the squadron book) this shroud is not present. My academy model has this cockpit shroud molded into it,, and I will have to shave some parts back to simulate the missing shroud, but you would actually be able to see the control panel when the model is completed. Were these shouds often removed in the field?
It is pretty difficult to explain without pictures. Do you think I would get in trouble if I posted some of the cockpit picutres from the Squadron book?
Thanks,
C. Alan
