Hi,
I normally just build armour models, but I purchased this kit whilst in the throes of nostalgia - are there any detail kits to be had - the gun tubs look particularly bare?
Thanks in advance.

White Ensign Models has a number of different photo etch set available. I have no experience with them, but reviews seem favorable. Check it out here...

Tom's Model Works makes a WW1 British Guns P/E set in 1/72; the item# is 301.
On that sheet, among the Lewis & etc is a 1919 Vickers which provides a decent start at making the guns better. You get 2 guns per sheet, so you'd need to order several sheets to fully do the Stirling.
The rest of the gun turret/mount, etc, is up to you.
I have these for my Airfix Sunderland, but given the quality of the clear parts & etc, I'm not sure just how much work is worthwhile -- this could be a mood thing.
(Yes, I got the 3 new WEM detail sheets & some new engines). The project has yet to hit the bench.

jRatz, I got 3 unbuilt Sunderlands. Lemme know what you think of the PE sets, are they worth the price? I think Squadron makes replacement Vac-form clear parts (turrets/cockpit). Also what engines did you pick up?

Chief:
Yeah, I have the Squadron "glass" -- frames aren't very sharp -- least of my problems.
Engines & Things make replacement Bristol "Peggys", item #72023 -- one per pack, so order 4. Eng & Things engines aren't top of line, but WAY better than the kit.
Eng & Things also make a PW1830 (#72098, & you get 4 in the pack!!) in case you want to make a Mk.V. I haven't looked for props yet because I don't think I will try to convert the Mk.III to a Mk.V.
As to WEM P/E -- it is really good & I guess you gotta love the Sunderland to pay the price, although like any of their stuff, it is very well produced & the instructions are excellent.
If you don't want Yagi (or want to hand-build), you can skip one set. If you don't want open weapons bay, you can skip another. The interior set is the biggie.
I kinda wish they'd done a couple extra sets to flesh out the rest of the forward section on the lower level and fix up the turrets. I'm (sorta) studying pictures & etc to see how much I'm gonna add on my own. Bigger issues are fixing up the outside panels & things of the kit.
I built this when it first came out in early 60's & forgot how "ugly" it was ....
