Can anyone point me to a page with Spirfire reference pictures, or tell me what color the landing gear and wheel wells are to be in. Acording to Tamiyas instruction it's supposed to be in the same color as the underside of the fusulage, and Airfix instructions says that the landing gear should be aluminium and the wells in "cockpit green"

So, I'm thankful for help on this isue.

Well, after doing some searching and looking at restored spitfire pics, it looks as if the gear bay color is dependent on the type of spitfire being modeled. If you check out Aircraft Resource Center and then click on 'Walkarounds' at the top and then on 'propeller aircraft' on the page that pops up, there are about six or seven links to photo's of various various versions of restored spits. Some of green gear bays while others have them the same as the underside. Good luck!

I agree with Tin that the color will vary with the Spitfire mark. Most of them have the well color the same as the underside.

Why not join in with Sabot and Tin . . . .

I scanned through the Mk. I through Mk. 22/24 pages in Spitfire - The History, by Morgan and Shacklady. Even though all the photography was in black and white, the wheel well or wheel door colors almost unanimously appeared to be the same intensity as the underside colors -- even in three photos of PS Spits in what appeared to be the PRU Blue scheme.

Aluminum was also a common main gear strut color on several British-built aircraft in WW II -- this was almost always paint, not bare metal, while the oleo strut would be bare metal.

HTH #:-)
