Hello all you aircraft model-builders! this is my first post on this forum. I've recently bought a Tamiya Bf-109E-4/7 Trop. I was wondering if there is anything i should know about this kit, and if you could find and specifically the interior color of the cockpit. Any help/suggestions are much appreciated. This is my first aircraft in about 5 years so i probably am not too familiar with this category.

Cheers

As far as the interior color goes, it will be either RLM 66, which is a dark, nearly charcoal grey, or RLM 02, which is a greenish grey. The color used will depend on what time period you're going to depict with the kit, since (I believe - no impromptu research done) the North Africa (40-42) timeframe corresponds to when the switch from 02 to 66 occurred.

Do a search for RLM02 and RLM66 and you should find plenty of opinions on the net.

Enjoy the kit!

I believe all E model 109 were built before the change in cockpit colour, so the cockpit would have been painted RLM 02, as would the weel wells, landing gear legs and inside the gear doors. The weels were painted gloss black.
The tamiya Messerschmitt is a very nice kit, although I haven't built one, I've seen plenty of reviews and comments about this model. Should be a joy to build.
I have built the Hasegawa Bf 109 E7 Trop, I'll post a couple of pics, soon.

Hi there

I'd go with Mal on the RLM 02 cockpit. There might have been some later re-paints, but 02 was the standard colour during the 'E production run.

As for the wheel wells, it'd be worth using a dull tan colour to depict the leather liners.

I built a Tamiya Bf 109E for Holdfast's Battle of Britain campaign... I have to say it was one of the most pain-free builds I can remember.

All the best

Rowan

Hi Mal

That is some very tasty mottling!

Where's the "nasty" swastika - are you going to raid an after-market decal-sheet?

Suberb, as always

Yeah, Rowan, Mal does seem to have a bit of an aversion to the swazzie, Doesn't he? Maybe something he learned at granmum's knee?

[EDIT]- as usual Mal, sianding here in awe of your skill...

Hi PieSpy
Here is a link to a WWII German color chart that should be able to help you out also.
All the guys above are really knowledgeable when it comes to this kind of thing. You can't go wrong if you follow their advice
http://ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_germany.htm

I put together a Tamiya bf-109 and it is a nice kit. Good quality and pretty good detail. I'm sure you will enjoy building it.

Where at in Illinois are you from? There are so many people from so many places in the world here at Armorama it is cool to actually see someone here from my own general area.
Good modeling,
Wayne

Hi again

I should have said; the instrument panel would be RLM 66 in an overall RLM 02 cockbit..

All the best

Holdfast, Merlin,
Just wanted to say "wow" on your camo patterns-- well done. I suddenly have the urge to start on my 109 kits

Hehehe, no I don't have any aversion to swastikas, And to prove it:

or take a look at the Galland 109 at the top of the page
My only defence for missing the swastikas off this 109 Trop and my Hs 129 is old age and the fact that Revell don't (I guess) include swastikas in their kits. No wait I have a better excuse. As Revell don't include swastikas in their kits, because they are banned in certain countries, I'm waiting to find out exactly what style were used on these 2 aircraft

Is it the AMTech issue?
